IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Karan,

Hope you are doing well.I am writing this letter to inform you that, as you know, it has been ten years since we have completed college. I am planning to celebrate this by organizing a reunion for all our friend and their partners. It will be a movie evening followed by a dinner for all our friends and classmates.

It would be great to celebrate in this way, as i am thinking of watching the movie Chichorre with everyone. The reason to watch this movie is that it has a story about college life. We all became good friends in college so it will bring back our memories from those days we spent together.

I am sending this letter to you, as i need some help from you. As there are few friends who are not in my contacts anymore. I request you that once the template is ready for party, can please send to them as well and invite them on my behalf. I shall be very thankful to you.

Yours lovingly,

Mahi Sharma.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you propose a reunion with a movie and dinner, explain the connection between the film and college memories, and ask Karan to contact classmates you can no longer reach. The purpose and friendly relationship are clear. The explanation of why this format would be enjoyable is relevant, but it is brief; you could develop it by explaining how the dinner or shared viewing would help everyone reconnect. The request for help is also understandable, though the practical details are incomplete: clarify what the invitation template should contain and when you need it sent. This covers the task well overall, with some ideas less fully developed than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear progression from the reunion plan, to the reason for choosing the film, and then to your request for help. Separate paragraphs make these stages easy to follow, and phrases such as “The reason” and “As there are few friends” signal connections between ideas. However, some links feel mechanical or unclear: “I am sending this letter to you, as i need some help from you” repeats the purpose rather than moving directly to the request, and the sentence beginning “As there are few friends” is a fragment. Improve the flow by joining related ideas more smoothly and using clear references, especially around the invitation template and the classmates to be contacted.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for communicating the reunion plan and its personal significance, with relevant expressions such as “reunion,” “movie evening,” and “bring back our memories.” The tone is generally suitable for a friendly letter. However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural, including “all our friend,” “template is ready for party,” and “send to them,” which make parts of the request less fluent. “Celebrate this” is also vague when the anniversary could be named directly. Aim for more natural collocations and precise wording for invitations and event arrangements. This would add flexibility and polish while preserving the clear, accessible style of the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the reason clause “as I am thinking of watching the movie” and the relative clause “who are not in my contacts anymore.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. For example, “all our friend” needs a plural noun, and “As there are few friends who are not in my contacts anymore” is an incomplete sentence. The request “can please send to them” is missing a subject and object structure, while “once the template is ready for party” needs an article. Also check sentence spacing and capitalisation, as in “well.I” and “i.” More accurate sentence construction would strengthen an otherwise clear message.
