IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Preeti,
Hope you are doing well! I am writing this letter to invite you for an event that i am planning to organise for all our batchmates. Since its been 10 years we all left our college so am palnning to organise this get together and looking forward for your help in this.
I am planning to mark it as our renunion or can be called a 10 year anniversay event. We will have dance floor, cocktails and some good food for refreshments.
I feel like it would be fun and we can all cherish our memories together. Moreover, we can play games that we used to do during our college days
It would be great if you can help me suggest good food restaurants from where we can place order. Also, I might need your help in deciding and organising games that we can play. I am good at sending invitations so can easily do that so you need not to worry about invites.
I hope you will welcome my invite and looking forward to see you soon.
Yours lovingly,
Neet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter covers all three required points: you propose a reunion, explain that classmates can share memories and play familiar games, and ask Preeti to help with food choices and games. The friendly invitation and closing also suit the purpose. The explanation of why this format would be enjoyable is relevant, but remains fairly brief; the event plan could also be more specific, for example by indicating a possible venue or how the celebration would bring the whole group together. This meets the task well overall, while some ideas are less fully developed than others. To strengthen the response, add a little more detail about the event and explain why the proposed activities would appeal to your classmates.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear overall progression: it introduces the reunion, describes the proposed activities, gives reasons for celebrating, and then asks for help. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Also” help connect related points. The opening and closing make the message easy to recognise as a personal letter. Some transitions could be smoother: the move from the event description to the reason for it is abrupt, and “I hope you will welcome my invite” repeats the invitation rather than bringing the request to a natural conclusion. Use a clearer transition between the plan and its benefits, and finish with a direct, warm request for a reply or confirmation.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a familiar social letter, including “get together,” “cherish our memories,” “refreshments,” and “organising games.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the tone is generally friendly. There are, however, several spelling errors and awkward or imprecise expressions, such as “renunion,” “anniversay,” “palnning,” and “mark it as our reunion.” “Cocktails” may also be more specific than necessary if you mean drinks generally. Aim for accurate spelling and more natural collocations, such as saying you will “hold a reunion” or “celebrate our ten-year anniversary.” This would make the message sound more fluent and precise without changing its informal style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and the meaning is generally clear. For example, “Moreover, we can play games that we used to do during our college days” combines a main clause with a relative clause. Some grammatical errors remain, including missing subjects in “Hope you are doing well” and “so am planning,” and the construction “looking forward for your help” should use “looking forward to.” There are also issues with articles and sentence boundaries in “event. We will,” while “you need not to worry” is not the standard form. Review complete sentence structure, verb patterns after “look forward to,” and punctuation between sentences. These corrections would improve accuracy while preserving your range of structures.
