IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear friends,
I hope you are all doing well. It has been ages since we all have seen each other, so, I was planning to organise a get together event on 12th Octber this year as it is also 10-year anniversary of our graduation.
For this event, I am planning to book the college auditorium as we all will get to relive those moments and remeber the best days of our lives. The theme of the event will be "Cocktail Night" and everyone will be dressed accordingly.
Moreover, I was also looking forward to inviting our professors as well. This night we all will gather, party, play games and will share parts of our lives with each other making it a beautiful memory which we all will remember always.
I would really appreciate if you can all volunteer in making this get-together a total blast. We all will distribute tasks among ourselves like catering, decorations etc.
I am looking forward for your reply.
Yours lovingly,
Aastha

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address the three requested points: you propose a reunion at the college auditorium, explain that it would bring back shared memories, and ask classmates to volunteer for catering and decorations. The invitation to professors and the planned games and conversations add relevant detail. However, the request for help remains somewhat general: “volunteer” and “distribute tasks” do not specify what you would like this particular friend to do or how they could help coordinate. The reason for choosing this format is also only briefly explained. In addition, the greeting “Dear friends” addresses a group rather than the one college friend specified, and the letter does not clearly invite that friend to take part. Make the recipient and request more personal, and develop the rationale for the event.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it opens with a greeting and context, describes the event and its purpose, then asks for help and closes politely. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and phrases such as “For this event” and “Moreover” guide the reader through the ideas. This gives the response a coherent progression. Some connections are less smooth or slightly repetitive, however: “we all will gather, party, play games and will share” repeats the future construction, while “a beautiful memory which we all will remember always” restates the same idea. The shift from addressing “friends” to asking “you” for a reply also leaves the intended recipient unclear. Use more consistent direct address and link each paragraph to the next without repeating points.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a reunion letter, including “anniversary,” “auditorium,” “theme,” “professors,” and “volunteer.” These choices communicate the event and its practical arrangements, while “Cocktail Night” gives the plan a specific character. There are some spelling and word-choice inaccuracies, such as “Octber” and “remeber,” and “get together event” is an awkward combination. “Total blast” is friendly and understandable, but it is quite informal for a letter whose tone is otherwise warm and polite. The repeated use of “event,” “all,” and “remember” also limits variety. Choose more natural collocations and vary expressions for the reunion, shared memories, and organising tasks.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause in “as we all will get to relive those moments” and a longer sentence describing the planned activities. The main message remains clear, and several sentences are easy to follow. Some grammatical errors occur, though they rarely prevent understanding. For example, “since we all have seen each other” would be more naturally expressed with the past perfect, and “I would really appreciate if” needs “it” after “appreciate.” The phrase “I am looking forward for your reply” also uses the wrong preposition in this grammatical pattern. In the activities sentence, the repeated “will” makes the structure less controlled. Review tense choices, required words after common expressions, and parallel verb forms.
