IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Akhil,
How are you? I hope you are doing well. Its hard to believe that it’s been 10 years since we left our college. I think we need to organise a get together in this special event with our college friends and classmates.
I think we need to conduct a one day get together event with our friends in our college or nearby resort. We could invite all our friends and our favourite teachers.
I think this event will be a beautiful opportunity to get back to our college days and we will share all our memories with each other and we’ll able to know that how far our friends become in this ten years.
I need your help in conducting this get together by calling our friends who can attend this event and those who can’t. If possible please try to check where we need to conduct the event for celebration and then we’ll share about the programs we need to do in the event.
Let me know what you think about it and write back your thoughts.
Best wishes
Jagan

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three points in the prompt: you propose a one-day reunion at the college or a nearby resort, explain that it would let classmates revisit memories and catch up, and ask Akhil to contact friends and help choose a venue. The friendly opening and closing also suit a letter to a college friend. The purpose is clear, but some parts are less fully developed: for example, you do not explain what the event itself might include beyond inviting teachers and sharing memories, and the requested help with contacting friends is not very specific. Add a few practical details, such as a possible date, activities, or how Akhil could confirm attendance, to make the plan more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce the anniversary, suggest the event, explain its value, request help, and invite a reply. Paragraphing supports this progression, and phrases such as “I think” and “If possible” help signal your ideas and requests. However, the repeated use of “I think” makes the links between points somewhat mechanical, and the long paragraph about the event’s benefits and the help you need contains several ideas that could be separated more clearly. Use a wider range of natural transitions and give each main purpose its own paragraph. This would make the progression easier to follow and improve clarity in places such as “those who can’t,” where the intended meaning could be stated more explicitly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is adequate for communicating the reunion plan, and phrases such as “special event,” “favourite teachers,” and “share all our memories” make the topic clear. You also use relevant expressions for organising a gathering, including “invite,” “calling our friends,” and “conduct the event.” However, some word choices and collocations are awkward or repetitive, particularly “organise a get together in this special event” and “conduct a one day get together event.” The repeated use of “event” and “get together” also limits variety. Choose more natural expressions for a reunion and its arrangements, and use precise verbs such as “host” or “arrange.” These changes would make the letter sound more fluent and idiomatic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the reason clause “because we left our college” and the conditional request “If possible please try to check…”. Most of your meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “we’ll able to know” needs “we’ll be able to know,” and “how far our friends become” needs a suitable tense and structure, such as “how our friends have progressed.” In “we need to conduct a one day get together event,” the noun phrase also needs clearer grammatical construction. Review verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries, and add a comma after introductory phrases such as “If possible.” More accurate control of these patterns would strengthen the letter.
