IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Tim,
Hope this letter finds you well. As you know, its been 10 years since we graduated. I would like to host an event to celebrate and cherish the good times we had at college.
I had a lot of options in my mind for the event but after a long consideration, I finalised to host a Bollywood theme party. Additionally, I would like a red carpet entrance for all of my friends.
This party theme would be an appropriate choice, as I believe that everyone is well aware of the Bollywood trands and actors. Moreover, people can find costumes from the market.
I have already booked the hall. The menu has been decided and I would share the menu in the school group chat. I would like you to help me invite a singer for the the event, because I don't know much about the music industry. Someone told me that you have some contacts with some famous singers. Let me know if you can help me regarding this matter.
Hope to see you soon.
Best regards,
Fatima Hussain

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you propose a Bollywood-themed party with a red-carpet entrance, explain that guests know Bollywood and can find costumes, and ask Tim to help invite a singer. The purpose and friendly tone are clear. The explanation of why this format would work is relevant, but remains fairly general; for example, you could explain how the theme would bring back shared college memories or make the reunion more enjoyable for everyone. The request for help is also specific, though it could be developed by saying what kind of singer you have in mind or when Tim should contact them. This covers the task, with some ideas less fully developed than others.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is organised in a clear sequence: opening and purpose, event plan, reason for the theme, practical arrangements and request, then a polite closing. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and linking expressions such as “Additionally” and “Moreover” make relationships between ideas clear. The progression is logical throughout. Some connections are a little mechanical, however, and the transition from the theme’s appeal to the arrangements could be smoother. The sentence about the hall and menu also combines information with the request without much development. You could improve flow by grouping the event details together and using more natural links between the reason for the theme and the practical help you need.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for a friendly planning letter, including relevant expressions such as “red carpet entrance,” “theme party,” “menu,” and “music industry.” The tone is generally appropriate, and the meaning remains clear. There are some inaccurate or awkward choices that limit precision: “finalised to host” is not a natural collocation, “Bollywood trands” contains a spelling error, and “contacts with some famous singers” is less idiomatic than “contacts among” or “connections to” singers. “Regarding this matter” also sounds formal and vague in this informal letter. Aim to use more natural collocations and check spelling, while keeping the vocabulary conversational and specific to the event.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the reason clause in “as I believe that everyone is well aware…” and the explanation introduced by “because.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and punctuation generally supports readability. Some grammatical errors remain. In “its been 10 years,” the contraction should be “it’s been”; “after a long consideration” needs a more natural article or plural construction; and “I would like you to help me invite a singer for the the event” repeats the article. The sentence “The menu has been decided and I would share the menu” also shifts awkwardly between tenses. Proofreading these details and varying sentence patterns more confidently would strengthen accuracy.
