Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear john,

How are you doing? I bet you had a great thanksgiving with your family. Do you realise that it's 10 years since we left college and we are now buddies for a decade.

I want to celebrate this occasion with a Halloween theme party. Since Halloween is not so far away it would be a great to celebrate this anniversary along with Halloween. I am also inviting Aaron, mark and Adam obviously, no party is complete without Adam.

I am thinking 31st October date at 6:00 PM at my house. I am also planning for a spooky adventure setup in the front yard for the kids. It will be a great time for the kids as well, So I expect that you will bring your kids with you as well. For the Spooky adventure setup, I would be requiring some Halooween decorations like clowns, skulls and even carved pumpkins would work. If you can arrange and bring some of this items with you, it would be a great help.

Cheers,

Deep Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you propose a Halloween-themed party, explain that it can coincide with Halloween, and ask your friend to bring decorations. The date, time, venue, and invitation to bring the children make the plan concrete. The reason for choosing this format is relevant, but it is only briefly explained; develop why a shared Halloween celebration would suit your college group or make the reunion memorable. The request for help is also somewhat narrow: asking for decorations is clear, but you could specify who will arrange the children’s activity or help with food and invitations. The response is purposeful and covers the task, while some ideas need fuller development and support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible sequence, moving from a friendly opening and the anniversary to the proposed event and your request for help. Details such as “31st October,” “6:00 PM,” and “at my house” are easy to locate, and the closing suits the informal relationship. However, the middle section combines the date, children’s activity, invitation, and decoration request in one long paragraph, so the progression becomes slightly crowded. Some links are also mechanical, particularly repeated uses of “I am also” and “It will be.” Separate the event plan from the practical request, and use clearer references or varied transitions to make the connections between ideas smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for an informal invitation, including “Halloween theme party,” “spooky adventure setup,” and “carved pumpkins,” which help convey the event clearly. The friendly expressions “buddies for a decade” and “no party is complete without Adam” also establish an appropriate personal tone. Some choices are imprecise or awkward, however: “celebrate this anniversary along with Halloween” is less natural than saying the anniversary coincides with Halloween, and “some of this items” is an inaccurate phrase. There are also spelling and capitalisation slips, including “Halooween” and inconsistent names. More precise collocations and careful proofreading would make the vocabulary more controlled and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, such as “Since Halloween is not so far away, it would be great to celebrate…” and the conditional request, “If you can arrange and bring…”. Meaning remains clear throughout. Some grammatical and punctuation errors persist: “it would be a great to celebrate” needs the article removed, “I am thinking 31st October date” needs a preposition and a clearer construction, and “some of this items” should be “some of these items.” Capitalisation after sentence breaks is inconsistent, as in “So I expect,” and commas are sometimes used where a full stop would be clearer. Proofread articles, demonstratives, and sentence boundaries to improve accuracy.
