IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear simar,
I hope this letter finds you in radiant health and best of spirits. I am writing to let you know that I am planning to organise a 10- year reunion party for all the batchmates to celebrate this anniversary.
First of All, I am thinking of decorating student hall with flowers and ballons. Also, dancing and game floor will be separted from the sitting arrangements. we wanted to keep things simple and sober. Refreshments will be served and this arrangemnt will be done by student council.
I think it is the better way to see each other after a long wait of 10 year, as some of us , may be still connected with each other on social media. But through this reunion, we can relive those college memories again.
I really neeed your help to design the invitations and emailing them to all the batchmates.
I am really excited about this and hoping that it goes as we planned.
Yours lovingly,
Ramneet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three requested points: you propose a reunion party, explain that it would let classmates meet and revisit college memories, and ask Simar to design and email invitations. These details make the purpose clear and relevant. The explanation of the event is more specific than the reason for choosing it: “relive those college memories” is a useful idea, but you could develop why a reunion is especially suitable, for example by mentioning how it helps reconnect people who have lost touch. The request for help is also clear, though it could include a practical detail such as a deadline or a plan for collecting classmates’ contact information. Overall, the task is covered, but some points are less fully developed than others.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce the reunion, describe the arrangements, explain its value, and then ask for help. Paragraph breaks support this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Also,” “But,” and “as” help connect ideas. This gives the response a coherent structure. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. “First of All” suggests a list, but the following details do not develop into a clearly organised set of arrangements, while “But through this reunion” creates a slightly awkward contrast with the preceding point about social media. The closing also moves quickly from the request to your excitement. Use transitions that show the exact relationship between ideas and group related event details together to make the progression more natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a personal letter, including “reunion party,” “batchmates,” “sitting arrangements,” “refreshments,” and “relive those college memories.” These choices communicate the event and its purpose, and the tone is generally warm. There are some spelling and word-choice inaccuracies, such as “ballons,” “separted,” “arrangemnt,” and “neeed,” which reduce the overall accuracy. A few expressions are also less natural or precise: “dancing and game floor” could be expressed more idiomatically as “a dance floor and games area,” and “radiant health and best of spirits” sounds overly formal for writing to a friend. Aim for natural, accurate phrasing suited to the relationship, and proofread spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both simple sentences and some more developed structures, such as “I think it is the better way to see each other after a long wait of 10 year, as some of us may be still connected with each other on social media.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “we wanted to keep things simple” shifts into the past when the surrounding plans are described in the present, and “it is the better way” uses an unnecessary article. There are also issues with number and sentence boundaries, as in “after a long wait of 10 year” and the lowercase “we” after a full stop. Check tense consistency, articles, plurals, and punctuation, while continuing to use a mix of sentence forms.
