IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear John,

I hope you are doing fantastic. It has been ten years since we last met after graduation. I am writing this letter to invite you to a reunion event for classmates from college at Cola Hall.

Since I decided to recall all college memories in this celebration, I am planning to have a Back to School theme for this party. Everyone will come in college uniforms and behave the way they did in those days.

I reckon that it will be fun for everyone. Each of our classmates will get emotional after seeing the decorations for this event. It is one of the amazing ways to remember old days and memories.

I would like you to arrange uniforms for everyone as per their size. Hence, each person will have similar attire. I will send you the address of the shop, and you just need to pick up the dresses.

Thank you for your help. I will be waiting for this day.

Your Beloved,

Yasha

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three bullet points: you propose a “Back to School” reunion at Cola Hall, explain that it would bring back college memories and be enjoyable, and ask John to arrange uniforms. The purpose and friendly tone are clear. This meets the task well, but the reasons are only briefly explained: “It will be fun” and classmates getting emotional are asserted rather than supported with specific details about what the event would let people do or share. The request for help is also quite narrow, focusing only on collecting outfits. To strengthen the response, develop the benefits with a concrete example and clarify practical details such as when the event will happen or how John should coordinate sizes and collection.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression from the reunion invitation, to the theme, to the reasons, and finally to the request for help. Separate paragraphs make each main point easy to locate, and linking expressions such as “Since” and “Hence” help connect ideas. The closing is also appropriate for a personal letter. Some connections are less natural or precise: “Since I decided to recall all college memories in this celebration” is an awkward lead-in, and “Hence” makes the uniform request sound more like a formal consequence than a friendly request. A smoother transition and clearer links between the event’s benefits and the practical arrangements would make the cohesion more flexible and less formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the event and its theme, including “reunion,” “Back to School theme,” “college uniforms,” and “decorations.” These choices make the central idea easy to understand, and the tone is generally friendly. However, some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “recall all college memories,” “get emotional after seeing the decorations,” and “old days and memories.” “Your Beloved” is also an unusual sign-off between friends. These choices show attempts to express the idea vividly, but collocation and register are not consistently controlled. Aim for more natural phrases and avoid repeating the idea of memories; this would make the vocabulary more precise and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The letter includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and the meaning remains clear throughout. For example, “I am planning to have a Back to School theme for this party” is straightforward and accurate, while “Everyone will come in college uniforms and behave the way they did in those days” combines ideas effectively. Some grammatical choices are less controlled. “It has been ten years since we last met after graduation” creates an unclear time relationship, and “I would like you to arrange uniforms for everyone as per their size” has an awkward grammatical pattern around the possessive phrase. The sentence beginning “Since I decided…” also needs a clearer structure to express the intended reason. Review time expressions and possessive forms, and vary sentence patterns while keeping them accurate.
