IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Ritika,
I hope you are doing really well! I am writing this letter to inform you that I am planning to organise a get together on your birthday at a Pizza shop which is recently opened near our college.
Its been ages since we met each other. It will be a great opportunity for everyone to spend time with each other, and it can make more fresh memories. We haven't celeberate each other's birthday since 10 years, so I think this is the perfect day to celebrate birthday and our 10 years anniversary, and I think everyone has summer vaccations so all our classmates can come to this occassion.
I need your help to inform other classmates because i lost my old phone, in which I have contact number of all other classmates, If you can call them then it would be helpful for me. Along with this, I get to know that, one of our friend has opened her Bakery, so I want her to give order to bake 2 cakes: one for your birthday, and other for 10 years of anniversary cake.
I hope you will like my idea. Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
Priya.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three points: you propose a get-together at a newly opened pizza shop, explain that it would let classmates reconnect and make new memories, and ask Ritika to contact classmates and arrange cakes. The birthday and anniversary combination gives the event a personal reason, and the summer-holiday detail helps explain why people might attend. However, the task is to celebrate ten years since leaving college, while the letter makes the event primarily a birthday celebration; the anniversary purpose could be stated more clearly and consistently. The reason for choosing a pizza shop is also not explained, and the request for help with the cakes could be more specific. Develop these points so the plan and its benefits are fully clear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce the plan, explain why it would be enjoyable, then describe the help you need before closing politely. Paragraphing supports this progression, and links such as “Along with this” make the second request easy to follow. This already gives the reader a coherent account of your idea. To make the organisation more polished, separate the event details from the reasons for celebrating, and make the connection between the birthday and the college anniversary explicit. Some references are slightly unclear—for example, “one of our friend” appears in the middle of the request, so the reader has to infer that this person is the baker. Use clearer transitions and references to make the relationships between ideas more precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the plan and requests, including “get together,” “opportunity,” “memories,” and “inform other classmates.” Some choices are suitable for a friendly letter, but the range is fairly basic and several expressions are inaccurate or awkward. For example, “celebrate birthday” needs a more natural phrase such as “celebrate your birthday,” while “10 years of anniversary cake” is unclear and unnatural. There are also spelling errors in “celeberate,” “vaccations,” and “occassion,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural collocations and check spelling carefully; this will help you express the anniversary plan more clearly without changing the friendly tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of simple sentences and longer structures, including the reason clause “because I lost my old phone” and the conditional request “If you can call them then it would be helpful for me.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in verb forms, articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries. For example, “We haven't celeberate” needs a past participle, and “one of our friend has opened” requires a plural noun after “one of.” The long sentence beginning “We haven't…” joins several ideas without clear punctuation, while “I get to know” does not fit the intended tense. Review these patterns and divide long sentences where needed to improve control and readability.
