IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Aman,
I hope you're doing well. I'm just writing to let you know that I am planning to organise an event to celebrate our college tenth anniversary.
I'd like to arrange a grand party in a well-reputed banquent hall which is located close to my house. I'd love to invite all my classmates and friends from college. The hall would be decorated with balloons and flowers, and wide range of food and beverages would be included in the menu. I also arranged a large television screen to show all the old pictures and videos of our old days.
I believe it would be good to celebrate in this way because it can help us remind our memories that we spent together. After celebration, I trust everyone would really feel happy and give them a sense of satisfaction.
I'd appreciate if you could help me with all these arrangements and I'd love to invite you a week before the celebration, which will make my work more easier. After you arrive at my home, we can book an event venue and send invitations to all college friends.
Looking forward to seeing you!
Best wishes,
Raman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you propose a party in a banquet hall, explain that it would help classmates recall shared memories, and ask Aman to help with arrangements and invitations. The specific details about food, decorations, and old photographs make the event easy to imagine. This meets the task well, but the reasons for choosing this format are only briefly explained, and the help you need is not fully specified: “help me with all these arrangements” is broad, while the later steps are not clearly divided between you and Aman. To strengthen the response, explain more precisely why a reunion party suits the occasion and name particular tasks you would like your friend to take responsibility for.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening, a description of the proposed event, a reason for it, and a request for help, followed by an appropriate closing. Paragraphing supports this progression, and phrases such as “I believe” and “After you arrive” help connect ideas. However, some links between details are not fully clear. For example, you say you have already arranged a screen, then later suggest that you and Aman can book the venue, so the sequence of planning is confusing. The sentence about inviting Aman “a week before the celebration” also makes the timing of his help unclear. Clarify the order of arrangements and use references that make each action and its timing explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a friendly reunion letter, including “celebrate,” “beverages,” “decorated,” and “invitations.” These choices communicate the plan clearly, and details such as “old pictures and videos” suit the topic. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit precision: “college tenth anniversary” does not clearly express that ten years have passed since graduation, “banquent” is misspelled, and “remind our memories” is not a natural collocation. “More easier” is also an incorrect form. Aim for more natural phrases and check spelling and word forms; for example, refer to a “ten-year reunion” and say that the photos will “bring back memories.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause “which is located close to my house” and the reason clause “because it can help us…”. Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. In “After celebration,” an article is needed; “I’d appreciate if” is missing “it”; and “After you arrive at my home, we can book…” shifts from the earlier claim that the screen is already arranged, making the sequence difficult to follow. The construction “which will make my work more easier” also has an incorrect comparative form. Review articles, omitted words, and comparative structures, and check that verb forms and sentence links express the intended timing clearly.
