IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Karthik,

I hope you are doing well. It has been ten years since we left our college. I would like to organise a get-together event to celebrate this anniversary with our friends and classmates and would need your help.

I would like to host a get-together party in Green Park Hotel, Hyderabad. It will be a full day event which can be attended along with their families. It will include breakfast, music and dance shows followed by lunch, games followed by award ceremony and dinner.

It will be good to celebrate it as we will meet our friends and their families. We will have some time to unwind ourselves from the busy daily routine we have. Also we would cherish our past memories with our friends.

I would need your help to gather the contacts of all our friends and classmates so that we can send invitations and plan the event successfully.

Looking forward to catch up with you.

Yours friendly,

Sivaji

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you propose a full-day gathering at Green Park Hotel, explain that it would let classmates and their families reconnect and relax, and ask Karthik to collect contact details. The schedule—breakfast, entertainment, games, an awards ceremony and dinner—makes the event reasonably clear. The explanation of why this format would be enjoyable is less developed, however: “unwind” and “cherish our past memories” are relevant but general, and the request for help focuses only on gathering contacts. To strengthen the letter, explain why a full-day, family-friendly event suits the anniversary and specify any further help needed, such as coordinating invitations or confirming attendance. The friendly opening and closing suit the purpose, though the sign-off could be phrased more naturally.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression from greeting and purpose to the proposed event, its benefits, and your request for help. Separate paragraphs make each part easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “Also” and “so that” show how ideas relate. The event details are presented in a sensible sequence, moving from breakfast through to dinner. Some connections are a little mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “followed by” in the schedule, and the benefits paragraph could link its points more smoothly. You could vary the transitions and make the relationship between the event format and its benefits more explicit. Overall, the organisation is clear and the reader can follow the message without difficulty.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a friendly invitation, including “get-together,” “anniversary,” “unwind,” “cherish our past memories,” and “award ceremony.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the tone is generally appropriate. Some phrasing is repetitive or not quite natural: “get-together event” combines two similar expressions, while “unwind ourselves” is an awkward collocation. “Busy daily routine we have” is understandable but could be more concise and idiomatic. The vocabulary is clear, though it does not yet show much flexibility or precision. Aim to use natural collocations and vary repeated words, especially when describing the event and the chance to reconnect.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, including “It will be a full day event which can be attended along with their families” and the purpose clause “so that we can send invitations and plan the event successfully.” Most ideas remain clear, and errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the letter. Some grammatical issues remain, however. In “Looking forward to catch up with you,” the verb after “to” should be in the -ing form. “Yours friendly” also has an incorrect grammatical form for a sign-off. In addition, “It will be a full day event” needs a hyphen in “full-day” when used as a compound adjective. Continue checking verb patterns, conventional letter endings, and punctuation in compound modifiers.
