IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Ayesha,
I hope you're doing well. Its been long since we saw eachother. I know after college, most of us got busy with life and couldn't arrange to meet all at once. Lately I was checking out our group photographs and I realized that next month, it would be the 10th anniversary since we left college. To celebrate these ten years, I am thinking to organise an event, mainly brunch followed by games and other fun activities by the beach side.
I selected this location because I remember most of us enjoyed chilling out at the beach side during our holidays. It will be fun to recall our memories by the beach side after a long gap. What do you think? If you have any other ideas or would like to add something else to the list, do lemme know.
I shared my plan with you but I need your help to organise and make this event a success. I remember you used to be the boss of our group and always had contact numbers of everyone. I need you to communicate with all the members of our group or share with me the details so I can invite them. Without this help, it will be very hard for me to organise this event.
I am hoping to hear from you soon!
Love,
Shazia

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points in the task: you propose a beachside brunch with games, explain that classmates enjoyed the beach and could revisit shared memories, and ask Ayesha to contact former classmates or provide their details. The friendly opening and closing also suit a letter to a college friend. The reason for choosing the venue is relevant, but the event plan and the benefits of celebrating this way could be developed further—for example, by explaining how the activities would help everyone reconnect or what the day might include. Your request for help is clear, though adding a practical detail such as a date, guest list, or invitation plan would make it more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you introduce the anniversary and proposal, explain the venue, then make your request for help. Paragraphing supports this progression, and links such as “To celebrate these ten years” and “I selected this location because” help readers follow your ideas. The sequence is generally logical, although some connections are repetitive: “beach side” appears several times, and the transition from the venue explanation to asking for Ayesha’s ideas could be smoother. The reference to Ayesha being “the boss of our group” leads naturally into the request, but the practical steps could be ordered more explicitly. Varying references and using a clearer transition into the request would make the cohesion more flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the event and your personal relationship, including “anniversary,” “organise,” “memories,” and “communicate.” The tone is warm and appropriate for a friend. However, some choices are informal or imprecise for a polished letter: “chilling out,” “do lemme know,” and “the boss of our group” could be expressed more naturally in this context. “Beach side” is repeated, and “make this event a success” is a familiar, general phrase rather than a precise description. There are also spelling or form issues such as “eachother.” A broader set of natural collocations for planning and reconnecting would improve precision and reduce repetition.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the reason clause in “I selected this location because…” and the conditional “If you have any other ideas…”. Most of the message remains easy to understand. Some grammatical and punctuation errors persist, however. In “Its been long since we saw eachother,” the contraction needs an apostrophe and the time expression requires a more natural construction. “I realized that next month, it would be the 10th anniversary since we left college” has an awkward tense and clause structure; “it will be ten years since we left college” would be clearer. Check article use and sentence punctuation as well, particularly around longer sentences. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen control.
