IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Manohar,
I hope you are in good health. Its been really long-time since the last letter, and I am really happy to hear that you started a new role as Team manager in Tata group. I know its your dream to work in higher management role.
Yesterday, I was going through our final year photo album, and I thought that it would be good idea to organise a get together event with our college friends on my 25th birthday. I was thinking to decorate in ninty's theme with western attire. I am also planning to include a dance event followed by pictures and dinner.
I believe that this theme could bring back our old memories and the attire would remind us the college days. If you remeber that we wore the same dress code on our final year annual fest organised by our college.
I would really like some help to make this event a success. Firstly, I need you to gather some information and contact details of our classmates, as I recently lost my phone. Furthermore, if you could also invite our college professors how taught during our tenure. The last thing I need is a proper convention to organise this event.
I hope you to see you soon and discuss more about this function.
Kind regards
Anand

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you propose a themed reunion with dancing, photographs and dinner, explain that it would revive college memories, and ask Manohar to find classmates’ contact details and invite professors. The personal references to his new role and your shared annual fest also make the letter relevant and friendly. Some details, however, are unclear or not fully developed. In particular, “a proper convention to organise this event” does not explain what specific help or venue you need, and the reason for choosing your 25th birthday is not connected clearly to the ten-year college anniversary. Clarify the event’s timing and specify practical tasks, such as booking a venue or coordinating food, to make the purpose and requests more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a coherent overall arrangement: it opens with personal news, introduces the reunion, gives a reason for the theme, and then lists the help required. Paragraphing supports this progression, and signposts such as “Firstly” and “Furthermore” help the reader follow the requests. Some connections are less clear, though. The shift from celebrating ten years since college to holding the event on your 25th birthday is abrupt, and “The last thing I need” does not clearly connect to the vague request for a “proper convention.” The closing sentence, “I hope you to see you soon,” also interrupts the otherwise clear ending. Make the links between the anniversary, date and practical arrangements explicit, and use transitions that show how each request relates to organising the event.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for a friendly invitation, including “get together,” “theme,” “attire,” “annual fest,” and “contact details.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the tone is generally appropriate. There are also attempts at more specific vocabulary, but some expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “ninty's theme,” “proper convention,” and “higher management role.” Spelling slips in “remeber” and “how” (where you mean “who”) also reduce accuracy. Choose familiar, precise collocations rather than forcing an unclear phrase: for example, describe a “1990s-themed reunion” and ask for help “booking a suitable venue.” Proofreading spelling and checking whether a phrase sounds natural in context would make your vocabulary more controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the conditional request “if you could also invite…” and the reason clause “as I recently lost my phone.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. Examples include “Its been” instead of “It’s been,” “it would be good idea” instead of “a good idea,” and “I hope you to see you soon,” which needs a different verb pattern, such as “I hope to see you soon.” The sentence beginning “If you remember” is also left as a fragment rather than being joined to the preceding idea. Review articles, apostrophes, verb patterns and sentence boundaries, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
