IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform you that I am organising a college reunion party to mark the 10th anniversary of our college completion. All our professors and teachers have reached out to me to organise this event.

Firstly, I want the celebration to be glamourous and grand and to ensure this I have invited all our classmates and their spouses. The event would feature a dress code and a dance competition. Also, I would like to play some old videos from our past golden days to commemorate our journey and past experiences.

Moreover, the main reason I want to celebrate in this way is to ensure we can talk to each other and redevelop the mutual bond and understanding once we had during our college time, which is lost over the years as many of us haven't been in touch for a long period of time.

I would like you to take care of the catering and the decoration of the event. Further, my uncle who is a event manager will be supporting you whereever possible throughout the event. I hope to see you over a coffee soon.

Best wishes,

Prateek

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requirements: you propose a reunion party, explain that it would help classmates reconnect, and ask Sam to handle catering and decoration. The event details—inviting classmates and spouses, setting a dress code, holding a dance competition, and showing old videos—make the plan clear and relevant. Your reason about rebuilding bonds after losing touch is also well connected to the occasion. To develop the response further, clarify practical details such as when or where the event might take place, and explain more specifically what Sam should arrange. The request is understandable, but a little more detail would make the ideas more fully supported and the plan easier to act on.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: it introduces the reunion, describes the proposed activities, explains the purpose, and then asks for help. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “Moreover,” and “Further” make the relationships between ideas easy to follow. The closing is appropriate for a friendly letter. Some transitions feel slightly formulaic, however, and “Further” does not connect as naturally as it could to the request about your uncle. You could make the flow more conversational by linking the reason and request directly—for example, explaining that Sam’s help would make the event possible after describing why reconnecting matters. Overall, the organisation is clear and cohesive, with room for more flexible linking.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a reunion letter, including “commemorate,” “mutual bond,” “dress code,” and “dance competition.” These choices help convey both the celebratory tone and the purpose of reconnecting. There are also some less natural or inaccurate expressions: “college completion” is not the usual way to refer to leaving college, “redevelop the mutual bond” is awkward, and “golden days” would sound more natural as “good old days.” “Glamourous” is also misspelled; the standard spelling is “glamorous.” These issues do not prevent understanding, but more precise collocations and consistent spelling would make your vocabulary more natural and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and several sentences are controlled well, such as “I am writing to inform you that I am organising a college reunion party” and the explanation beginning “which is lost over the years.” The overall meaning remains clear. A few grammatical errors persist: “my uncle who is a event manager” needs the article “an,” and “whereever possible” should be “wherever possible” (a spelling issue rather than a grammar error). The long sentence about rebuilding the bond could also be punctuated or divided for easier reading. Continue using subordinate clauses, but check articles and sentence boundaries carefully to make your grammar more consistently accurate.
