IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Atul,

I hope you receive this letter soon. I have great news for you. Next month, on the 25th, is our 10th anniversary of leaving our college, and I want to celebrate it with all our college friends and classmates.

It will be a simple themed party which I want to organize to show our relationship and emotions with each other. And I will include one thing in this event: everyone needs to bring one object with them that is related to our college days.

I think it would be a good way to celebrate our anniversary, and it would be a reminder of our beautiful memories of those college days. We can have a good time together, as nowadays we are all busy with our own personal and work lives. At this party, we can enjoy each other's company and leave stressful lives behind.

For this event, I need your help; all you need to do is make a list of all our college friends and classmates and contact them to inform them about this event. I will send you the location with all other details, which may be required for you.

Hope you will consider it and come up with help.

Your friend,

Manpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you propose a themed party, explain that it would revive college memories and give busy friends time together, and ask Atul to contact classmates. The idea of bringing an object connected with college days adds a relevant, personal detail, while the date makes the invitation concrete. Your reasons are extended enough to show why this format would suit the occasion, although the explanation of the theme and the object activity could be developed further—for example, by describing how the objects might be shared or displayed. The request for help is clear, but could also specify a deadline or ask Atul to confirm who can attend. Overall, the purpose and intended reader remain clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression: you introduce the anniversary, describe the proposed event, explain its benefits, and then make a practical request. Paragraphing supports these shifts, and links such as “I think it would be a good way” and “For this event” help the reader follow your reasoning. The closing also returns to the request, so the letter feels complete. Some connections are a little mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “and” to add information, and “Hope you will consider it and come up with help” is not fully clear as a final transition. You could make the flow more natural by varying linking phrases and ending with a direct request for a reply or confirmation.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for a friendly invitation and conveys the main ideas clearly, with relevant phrases such as “themed party,” “college days,” and “each other’s company.” You also use language suited to the personal context, including “beautiful memories” and “busy with our own personal and work lives.” However, some choices are imprecise or unnatural: “show our relationship and emotions with each other” is vague, and “come up with help” does not express your request idiomatically. “Leave stressful lives behind” is understandable but could be phrased more naturally. Aim for more precise collocations and avoid repeating broad words such as “event” and “good time”; this would make the letter sound more fluent and polished.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and most of the message is easy to understand. For example, the sentence beginning “I think it would be a good way” combines the reason for celebrating with the memory it would create, while “as nowadays we are all busy” adds a supporting explanation. Some grammatical issues remain. In “Next month, on the 25th, is our 10th anniversary,” the sentence structure is awkward; a clearer form would be “The 25th of next month marks our tenth anniversary.” The construction “one thing in this event” also needs a more natural grammatical pattern, such as “one activity at the event.” Review sentence structure and phrasing in longer sentences to improve accuracy while retaining this variety.
