IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Raj,

How are you? I hope you are doing well.

I would like to inform you about anniversary of our college friendship.

Firstly, although our all college friends never met after completing our graduation, on Sunday we have a chance to celebrate our 10 years friendship with our all close friends. However, I would like to organise party with cheerful activities such as playing games, music, dance and dinner at royal ressort which is located at Udaipur.

Secondly, in my opinion, this party would be memorable because we all are living with busy lifestyle such as workload and resposibility of family, so now, we have opportunity to address stressful life by anniversary celebration. Moreover, I would be grateful if you help me while organising party. For example, you can invite college group and bring music system.

Lastly, I am very excited to meet our friends and create wonderful memories.

Your best friend, Rahul.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you propose a party with games, music, dancing and dinner at a resort in Udaipur, explain that it would let busy former classmates reconnect, and ask Raj to invite the college group and bring a music system. These details make the purpose clear and the ideas relevant. The explanation of why this particular event would be enjoyable is less fully developed, however: the link between celebrating and “address stressful life” is unclear, and the plan lacks practical details such as a date, guest arrangements or how Raj should help beyond two tasks. The response therefore covers the task, but some points are more developed than others. Clarifying the benefit and making the request more specific would strengthen it.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: it introduces the anniversary, presents the event, explains its value and asks for help before closing warmly. The signposts “Firstly,” “Secondly” and “Lastly” help readers follow the main points, and the paragraphs broadly group related information. However, the transitions can feel mechanical, and “However” does not express a clear contrast in the sentence about meeting on Sunday. Some connections between ideas are also abrupt, particularly the move from busy lives to addressing stress. Use fewer formulaic sequencing words and connect each reason directly to the event or request. Clearer paragraph breaks between the proposal, its benefits and the practical arrangements would make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the event and its purpose, including “memorable,” “cheerful activities,” “workload” and “wonderful memories.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “organise a party” and “create wonderful memories.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “anniversary of our college friendship” does not clearly name the ten-year college reunion, and “address stressful life” is not a natural way to describe relieving stress. Spelling errors such as “resposibility” and “ressort” are noticeable, while “our all close friends” is awkward. Build a bank of natural phrases for reunions, celebrations and making arrangements, and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause beginning “although” and a conditional request, “I would be grateful if you help me.” The main message remains understandable, and the letter includes a range of sentence purposes. Some grammatical errors nevertheless reduce accuracy. For example, “although our all college friends never met” has an unclear construction, and “we all are living with busy lifestyle” needs more accurate article and sentence structure. In “if you help me,” the conditional form would be more natural with “could help.” There are also issues with articles and number in phrases such as “organise party” and “10 years friendship.” Practise accurate noun phrases and conditional requests, then proofread sentence structure and punctuation.
