IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Davi,

How have you been? I'm so happy to tell you that I want to plan an event to celebrate our ten years anniversary with all our friends from the college.

I am thinking to plan a dinner at Indian sweet master restaurant which is famous for its open terrace party hall on their rooftop. As there is fall season in Brampton, it is really good idea to do get togather under an open sky.

I am sure that there is no good way of celebrating reunion other than seeing each other on a dinner. We can spend quality time while eating and share our thoughts. Moreover, if we would like to listen to music or dance, they also provide access to play our preferrable music.

Finally, I would really appreciate if you could assist me to invite all our close friends. Also, I am not very keen in deciding what food we all want, so if you could decide whether we should go with indian food or italian will be great.

I can't wait to see you. Let me know if you can provide me any help.

Take care and see you soon!

Best wishes,

Raj.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you propose a rooftop dinner, explain that it would let classmates reconnect over food and possibly music or dancing, and ask Davi to invite friends and help choose the menu. The purpose and friendly tone are clear throughout, and the suggestions are relevant to a college reunion. Your reasons are supported, particularly the chance to “spend quality time” and “share our thoughts,” though the explanation of why this venue and format would be especially suitable could be developed further. The request for help is also clear, but you could make the practical arrangements more specific—for example, asking Davi to confirm attendance or help book the venue. Overall, the task is fully addressed with ideas that are clear, though some could be extended.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the anniversary, describe the proposed venue, explain the benefits, and then ask for help. Separate paragraphs make each part easy to follow, while phrases such as “Moreover” and “Finally” signal the development of your ideas. The opening and closing also suit a personal letter. Some connections are a little mechanical, especially the repeated use of “I am” and “if,” and the sentence about music and dancing could be linked more smoothly to the dinner plan. You could improve the flow by varying transitions and making references more precise—for instance, clarifying who “they” refers to in “they also provide access.” The overall organisation and progression remain clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a friendly invitation, including “celebrate,” “rooftop,” “quality time,” “reunion,” and “assist.” These choices communicate the event and your requests effectively, and the tone is generally appropriate. There are, however, some inaccurate or awkward word choices and collocations, such as “ten years anniversary,” “do get togather,” “preferrable music,” and “keen in deciding.” Spelling errors such as “togather” and “indian” also reduce accuracy. Aim to learn common word partnerships and check spelling: for example, say “ten-year anniversary,” “get together,” and “preferred music.” More precise vocabulary for organising an event would also help you express the practical details flexibly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause beginning “As there is fall season” and a conditional request with “if you could decide.” Most of the message remains understandable, and the errors do not prevent the reader from following your plans. Some grammatical inaccuracies occur, however: “I am thinking to plan” needs a different verb pattern, “it is really good idea” is missing an article, and “if we would like” is not the appropriate form in this conditional context. There are also issues with prepositions and sentence construction in “assist me to invite” and “provide me any help.” Practise verb patterns, articles, and conditional forms, then proofread for punctuation and sentence boundaries.
