Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Susan,

I hope you are in the pink of health! Since it's been a decade we all have passed out our college diploma, I've made some arrangements for our get together, where all the old buddies and classmates can catch-up. Therefore, I have decided to book a small banquet hall and enjoy delicious snacks, meals along with rewinding our old memories and listen to a local band in the evening which is invited.

I believe cherishing past days is the best form of making our souls happy and all of us will get a chance to sit together, chit-chat about our present, future life. Also, we can enjoy our favourite food and dance on our favourite music to celebrate this meet up.

I'd have to make some arrangements for this party in advance. I'd so glad if you could help me with reserving a hall, we both can together visit there this weekend ,if you are available. Moreover, we can go and decide the menu and then call everyone to invite.

Write back whenever you have some free time!

Best wishes,

Kiran

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three points and maintains a friendly, appropriate tone for writing to a college friend. You clearly propose a banquet-hall gathering with food, memories and live music, and explain that it would let everyone reconnect and enjoy time together. You also ask Susan to help reserve the hall and choose the menu, so the practical request is clear. These details make the response relevant and developed. To strengthen it further, explain more specifically why this format suits the whole group—for example, how the venue or activities would help classmates reconnect—and clarify whether the event is already planned or still being proposed. The ideas are clear, though some supporting reasons remain fairly general.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear sequence: you introduce the reunion plan, explain its appeal, and then ask for help with arrangements. The paragraph breaks support this progression, while phrases such as “Therefore,” “Also,” and “Moreover” help connect related points. The opening and closing also make the letter feel complete and appropriately personal. At times, however, the links between ideas are a little mechanical or the sentence carries several activities at once, particularly the long sentence describing the hall, food, memories and band. Separating the event details into clearer steps and using more varied references to connect the reasons and arrangements would make the progression smoother and less dependent on explicit linking words.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range for a social letter, including expressive phrases such as “in the pink of health,” “cherishing past days,” and “catch-up,” alongside event vocabulary such as “banquet hall,” “local band,” and “menu.” This gives the message warmth and helps communicate the plan. The range also shows attempts at less common expressions, but some choices are not quite natural in context: “passed out our college diploma,” “rewinding our old memories,” and “dance on our favourite music” are awkward collocations. “Meet up” is also less precise than a term such as “reunion” for this occasion. More consistently natural collocations and precise event-related vocabulary would build on the range already shown.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the reader can follow the intended meaning throughout. For example, “I believe cherishing past days is the best form…” introduces a reason, while “we both can together visit there this weekend” attempts to combine a request with a future arrangement. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “Since it's been a decade we all have passed,” the time clause and verb construction are not formed accurately; “I'd so glad” is missing a verb; and “we both can together visit” has awkward word order. Punctuation is also inconsistent, especially the space before the comma in “weekend ,if.” Review clause structure, verb forms and sentence punctuation, while continuing to use a mix of sentence types.
