IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Maha,

I hope you're doing great. I'm writing this to you since its been decade we graduated our high school. I was thinking to plan a reunion with all our gang.

I was thinking to celebrate this event as we use to do in our old college days, whenever we wanted to celebrate some thing we go to our place called Patricks Fry Chick and we can have pricks together while chit chatting about what happened all those years. Moreover, I was thinking maybe if we still stand on our feets we can take photos together for memory.

As per my point of view, we haven't celebrated anything since we left college this could be best way to mark this event through reliving our old memories by going to the same place we use to hang out and we can go through our yearbook to just see the glow ups of our gang.

I already made all the preparations, I just want you to be there before everyone else so we can greet everyone together and yeah, I want you to make a group in which I can send invitations to everyone as I barely have the contacts, but I know that you was connected with everyone all those years.

Yours sincerly,

Maira

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you propose a reunion at the familiar restaurant, explain that revisiting it and looking through the yearbook would revive shared memories, and ask Maha to arrive early and create a group for invitations. These are relevant, personal ideas, and the purpose of the letter is clear. The celebration plan is more developed than the practical arrangements, however: it is not clear when the event will happen or what specific organising tasks Maha should take on beyond contacting classmates. The description of taking photos is also brief. To strengthen the response, give a little more detail about the event and make the requested help more specific, such as asking Maha to confirm classmates’ availability or coordinate a date.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce the reunion, describe the proposed celebration, explain its significance, and finish with requests for help. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and links such as “Moreover” and “As per my point of view” help signal how ideas relate. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent overall organisation and shows some movement towards more flexible cohesion. However, the explanation of why the event would be meaningful repeats the idea of returning to the old place and reliving memories, and the long final paragraph combines several requests. Use clearer transitions between the reason for the event and the practical arrangements, and divide or streamline the final requests so each is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the reunion idea and its personal significance, including “reunion,” “yearbook,” “reliving our old memories,” and “invitations.” The familiar, friendly tone is appropriate for writing to a college friend. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unclear, such as “celebrate this event as we use to do,” “have pricks together,” and “stand on our feets.” There are also spelling or form errors in “sincerly” and “some thing.” These issues sometimes make the intended meaning difficult to identify, even though the main message remains understandable. Aim for more precise everyday expressions and check spelling and collocations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, for example, “As per my point of view, we haven't celebrated anything since we left college” and the sentence explaining that Maha knows everyone. The reader can generally follow your meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. In “its been decade,” the contraction and article are incorrect; “whenever we wanted to celebrate … we go” shifts tense, and “you was connected” has incorrect subject–verb agreement. The sentence beginning “I was thinking to celebrate” also uses an awkward grammatical pattern, while several long sentences would benefit from clearer punctuation. Practise consistent past-tense forms for past college habits and accurate agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries.
