IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Jayesh,

I couldn't believe it's been ten years we left the college! I wanted to organize a small get-together with all our friends.

I would love to arrange simple yet sober celebration. I have decided to decorate my living room with bright lights, some ribbons and balloons and also a cake to cherish ten years of togetherness as friends.

From my perspective, it would be great to celebrate this way as it'll provide all of us a little break from our busy schedule and hectic life. Secondly, we shall get a chance to see each other in person after so long. We shall remember the good old days that we all spent together.

I shall not require a lot of help from you as I've already arranged all the things that I mentioned and also I have already decided and ordered the menu for dinner. I just need you to come little early so that you can help me to arrange and adorn everything before all our friends come.

I can't wait to see all of you soon!

Regards,

Chintan Nayak

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three points clearly: you propose a get-together at your home, explain that it offers a break from busy lives and a chance to reconnect, and ask Jayesh to arrive early to help decorate. The purpose and friendly relationship are clear throughout, and details such as lights, ribbons, balloons and dinner make the plan concrete. The reasons for choosing this format are relevant, though they are stated rather generally; for example, you could explain why a relaxed home gathering would suit the whole group or how it would help everyone reminisce. The request for help is specific, but could be developed with one or two practical tasks. Overall, the response is complete and well supported, with some room to extend its ideas further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter follows a clear progression: it introduces the anniversary and proposed event, gives reasons, explains the help needed, and closes warmly. Paragraphing supports this sequence, while phrases such as “Secondly” and “From my perspective” make the relationships between ideas easy to follow. The opening and closing also suit an informal letter to a friend. At times, however, the linking is a little explicit or repetitive: “Secondly” is not needed after the first reason, and “I have already” appears twice in the same sentence. You could make the flow more natural by connecting the reasons directly and varying how you introduce details. Overall, the organisation is clear and cohesive, with some flexibility in linking, though a few choices feel mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range for the topic, including “get-together,” “hectic life,” “togetherness,” and “adorn,” and the meaning remains clear. There are also attempts to choose expressive language, such as “cherish ten years” and “good old days.” However, some word choices or collocations are not quite natural: “sober celebration” does not convey the intended sense of a simple, tasteful event, and “arrange and adorn everything” is less idiomatic than describing the room as decorated or set up. “Cherish ten years of togetherness as friends” is also awkwardly phrased. More precise, natural collocations would make the letter sound more fluent and controlled. This mix of suitable vocabulary and occasional inaccuracy fits the current level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The letter includes both simple statements and longer structures, such as “From my perspective, it would be great to celebrate this way as it’ll provide…” and the sentence explaining the help you need. Most meanings are easy to understand, and punctuation and paragraphing are generally controlled. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, however. In “I couldn’t believe it’s been ten years we left the college,” the time clause needs a clearer construction, such as “since we left college.” In “I just need you to come little early,” an article is needed before “little,” and “all the things that I mentioned” would be clearer with a more accurate reference. Review time clauses, articles and sentence construction; greater accuracy across these patterns would strengthen the otherwise clear message.
