IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Kunal,
I hope you and shivani are doing well. It has been around ten years since we all graduated and I am thinking of organising a ten year aniversary celebration for our friendship with all the classmates.
I would love to organise a dinner party at my farmhouse with a theme that we all should be dressed as we used to in college. I'll organise all types of food that we used to have in canteen like vadapav, chinese and chicken tikka as well.
I think it is one of the best ideas to celebrate it this way as this will help us reconnect more and revive our memories that we made. It'll be like a tribute to this friendship.I'll also ask everyone to bring their families as well.
I needed a favour from you that you'll have to organise a photographer for ths event.
Also you and shivani should come by morning itself on coming sunday. One more thing, can you invite jacob too? I've lost his number.
Yours lovely,
zuv

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you propose a themed dinner at your farmhouse, explain that it could help classmates reconnect and revive shared memories, and ask Kunal to arrange a photographer. The invitation to bring families and the request to invite Jacob add relevant detail. The purpose and friendly tone are clear. To make the response more fully developed, explain more specifically why the college-clothing theme and familiar canteen food would make the gathering enjoyable, and clarify the event plan: “coming Sunday” is vague without a date, and the request to arrive in the morning is not linked to a particular organising task. These details would make the proposal more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall sequence: greeting and occasion, proposed event, reasons, then requests and closing. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and links such as “I think” and “Also” make the relationships between ideas understandable. However, some connections are abrupt: “I needed a favour from you” shifts quickly from the explanation to the photographer request, while “One more thing” introduces another request without much transition. The sentence about bringing families also feels added on rather than integrated into the event plan. Use clearer sequencing and reference—for example, connect the photographer request to capturing the memories you mention—to make cohesion more flexible and less dependent on simple transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a friendly invitation, including “dinner party,” “theme,” “reconnect,” “revive our memories,” and “tribute.” These choices communicate the event and its purpose clearly, and the food examples make the plan specific. Some wording is imprecise or repetitive, however: “celebration for our friendship” is less natural than describing a college reunion, and “all types of food” is vague. There are also spelling errors in “aniversary” and “ths,” and informal phrasing such as “come by morning itself” is not idiomatic. More precise event-related vocabulary and careful proofreading would improve control while preserving the warm tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes both simple sentences and some more developed structures, such as “I think it is one of the best ideas … as this will help us reconnect more.” Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical choices are inaccurate. “I needed a favour from you that you'll have to organise” mixes past and future forms and would be clearer as “I need a favour: could you organise…?” The phrase “a ten year anniversary” needs a hyphenated compound modifier, and “this friendship.I'll” needs a space after the full stop. The opening sentence also needs consistent capitalisation of names. Aim for more consistent tense and punctuation, and check sentence boundaries; this would strengthen accuracy without sacrificing the friendly style.
