It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sarah,
I hope you are doing well! i can't believe that it has already been ten years since we left the college. Why don't we make this occasion memorable?
I am thinking of arranging a grand ten-year reunion celebration dinner. The restaurant that is newly opened at the back of our old college would be a great place for this celebration. I've heard that they have a cooperative staff and their food is of excellent quality.
We could invite all of our classmates and teachers. Some of us haven't meet each other for a long period of time so it would be a great way to have a meet-up and chit-chat. We could also arrange different games, skits and speeches from our beloved teachers.
Actually I can't do this alone and need your help. I can invite the classmates but I need your help with finding their current contact number. Also I would really appreciate it if you could help me with selection of food items and decoration for the event.
I can't wait to see everyone again!.I am looking forward to your reply.
Best wishes,
Hooria

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you propose a reunion dinner, explain that it would let former classmates reconnect and enjoy activities, and ask Sarah to find contact numbers and help choose food and decorations. The venue and its staff and food provide relevant support for your suggestion, while the games, skits and teachers’ speeches add useful detail. Your friendly tone and clear invitation suit a letter to a college friend. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain briefly how the event might be organised—for example, suggest a date or ask Sarah to contact particular classmates. The reasons for choosing a dinner are clear, though they could be linked more explicitly to the anniversary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear, logical order: you introduce the anniversary, suggest the event and venue, describe activities, then explain what help you need before closing. Paragraph breaks make the main stages easy to follow, and phrases such as “We could also” and “Also” help connect related suggestions. The progression is clear throughout, although some links between ideas could be smoother. For instance, the move from the restaurant’s qualities to inviting classmates is abrupt; a sentence explaining how the venue suits a reunion would strengthen the connection. Check punctuation at the end, too: “again!.I” combines two sentence endings and interrupts the otherwise appropriate closing.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a friendly reunion letter, including “memorable,” “reunion celebration dinner,” “cooperative staff,” and “decoration.” These choices communicate the event and its practical arrangements clearly, and the tone is generally appropriate. Some expressions are less natural or precise, such as “have a meet-up and chit-chat,” “current contact number,” and “selection of food items.” “Chit-chat” is quite informal beside the more organised event details, while the other phrases could be expressed more idiomatically. There is also a spelling error in “meet” where the past participle is needed, though this is a grammatical form issue. More precise collocations would make the vocabulary more flexible and polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The letter includes a mix of simple and more developed structures, such as “The restaurant … would be a great place” and “I would really appreciate it if you could help me…”. Most sentences are easy to understand, and the requests are framed politely. Some grammatical errors remain: “i” should be capitalised, “haven't meet” should be “haven't met,” and “help me with selection” needs an article, as in “help me with the selection.” The final punctuation in “again!.I” also needs correction. These issues do not prevent understanding, but proofreading verb forms, articles, capitalisation and sentence boundaries would improve accuracy.
