Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Riya,
Hope you're doing splendidly! It's been ages since we've caught up with each other; so i get the ball rolling with some pleasant tidings. You'd be thrilled to hear that i am organizing a get together party for all our college friends as it's been ten years since we have finished our college.
Well! I am thinking if organizing a celebration at hotel. Music, games and ofcourse mouth watering food will be there. I am also planning to greet all the loved ones with gifts to make them feel special.
The main reason of selecting hotel over house party is that it will reduce the burden of cooking, serving , cleaning. Also this way we will get enough time to spend with each other.
I also need your help to choose a hotel that will fit our budget. Moreover we have to select gifts for the guests. It may sound like a hassle but a simple budget will save me headache later. As you are already aware that you're the first person that sprang to my mind whenever i am in a bit of pickle.
Looking forward to see you soon
With regards,
Harjot Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requirements: you propose a hotel get-together with music, games, food and gifts, explain that it avoids the work of hosting at home and leaves more time together, and ask Riya to help choose a hotel and gifts. The purpose and friendly relationship are clear throughout. The ideas are relevant and supported with reasons, such as reducing the burden of cooking and cleaning. To make the response more fully developed, give a little more practical detail about the event—for example, a possible date, guest numbers, or the kind of help Riya could provide with bookings and invitations. The explanation of the celebration’s appeal is clear, though it could be extended beyond convenience.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the reunion, describe the proposed celebration, explain why a hotel is suitable, and then ask for help. Paragraphing supports these shifts, and linking expressions such as “Also,” “Moreover,” and “As” help connect ideas. The closing is appropriate for a personal letter. Some transitions and references are less smooth: “Well!” is an abrupt move into the plan, while “It may sound like a hassle” does not make entirely clear whether you mean choosing gifts or organising the event. A more direct transition and clearer reference would make the cohesion feel more flexible and less dependent on signposting.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range for a friendly letter and show some flexibility with phrases such as “mouth watering food,” “reduce the burden,” and “in a bit of pickle.” These choices help convey an informal, warm tone. There are also some inaccurate or less natural collocations and forms, including “organizing a celebration at hotel,” “greet all the loved ones with gifts,” and “save me headache.” Capitalisation and spelling conventions are inconsistent in “i” and “ofcourse.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. To strengthen the range, choose idiomatic expressions that fit the context and check compound forms and spelling before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes a mix of simple and more complex structures, including the reason clause “as it’s been ten years…” and the contrast in “The main reason… is that…”. Meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “thinking if organizing” needs a different clause structure, and “at hotel” is missing an article. In “Looking forward to see you soon,” the verb pattern should use a gerund after “to.” There are also inconsistent capital letters for “I” and punctuation spacing, such as the space before the comma in “serving , cleaning.” Review articles, verb patterns, and sentence punctuation; improving these recurring details would make the varied structures more controlled.
