IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear ANNA,

I hope you are doing well.Hows everyone at home.Im writing this letter to share an idea which i have planned.I am arranging a party to refresh our old memories and spend some time together

Its almost 10 years spent we left our college.we had lots of good memories.Im missing you and all of our classmates thats why i have decided to arrange a get.togather party at my house. As we can have more fun at home instead of going somewhere else.To make it more fasinating i am arranging a small musical event for that i called a local singer.

In dinner i have ordered bar.b.que that would be most favourite for our friends.I have already arranged many things it would be a great surprise for them .

I hope you also liked my plan .One thing i need a favour if you can, i have already make a list you just have a look if anyone missing in that please remind me.and please you reach few hours before party begin.

Your presence would be valuable for me

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you propose a party at your home, explain that it would let classmates enjoy themselves and revisit memories, and ask Anna to check the guest list and arrive early. The specific details—a local singer and a barbecue dinner—make the plan clear and relevant. The reason for choosing a home celebration is present, but “we can have more fun at home” is asserted rather than explained, and the help you request could be more precise, such as asking Anna to contact missing classmates or assist with preparations. This covers the task well overall, with some parts more fully developed than others; adding a little more support for your choices would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter follows a generally sensible order: you introduce the idea, describe the celebration, then make your request and close politely. This makes the main purpose easy to identify. However, most of the content is presented in one continuous block, so the shift from the event details to the favour is not clearly marked. Some links are also abrupt: “In dinner” begins a new detail without a smooth connection, while “One thing i need a favour” introduces the request awkwardly. Use separate paragraphs for the plan, practical details and request, and connect them with natural transitions. The overall arrangement is coherent, but cohesion and paragraphing are not yet consistently controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the event and its details, including “old memories,” “musical event,” “local singer,” and “valuable.” These choices help make the letter personal and specific. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce accuracy, including “get.togather,” “fasinating,” and “bar.b.que.” Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “refresh our old memories” and “In dinner.” Aim for conventional spelling and more natural collocations, for example, “reminisce about old times” and “For dinner.” The range is adequate for this familiar topic, but more accurate phrasing and a few more precise expressions would make your meaning smoother and more polished.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The letter includes both simple statements and attempts to link ideas, as in “As we can have more fun at home instead of going somewhere else.” However, this is a dependent clause presented as a sentence, and several other sentences have problems with verb forms, sentence boundaries or punctuation. For example, “Its almost 10 years spent we left our college” does not form a clear grammatical sentence, and “I have already make a list” needs a past participle after “have.” Missing apostrophes and full stops in “Hows everyone at home.Im writing” also make the writing harder to read. These errors sometimes affect clarity, so focus on complete sentences, accurate verb forms and careful punctuation while continuing to practise varied structures.
