IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear Kavya,
I hope you are doing really well! I am writing this letter to inform you about the upcoming event which I have organised on 10 November. If you rememeber, it will be ten years on this day since we last met each other.
I am planning to throw a party at Taj banquet hall, which is located nearby our college. I think this is best place, and convenient for everyone because we used to come here everyday during college days. Primarily, we will play some games , and will make some fresh memories. Along with this, we will try different cuisines.
As you know, we did not meet each other after the college. I think this is the great time and opportunity for everyone to freshen up the memories. Although everyone has summer vacation it will not hard to anyone to miss this event.
I am requesting you to come early on that day, because I am planning to decorate the place with each person's pictures that , and with the moments that we captured during college time.
Thank you.
Yours faithfully,
Preet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address the main purpose and identify a specific celebration: a party at the Taj banquet hall, with games, food and shared memories. You also explain why the venue is suitable, noting its proximity to college and its connection with your student days. However, the request for help is only partly fulfilled: asking Kavya to arrive early to decorate is specific, but you do not ask for help contacting classmates, arranging activities or preparing photographs. The reason that everyone has summer vacation is also unclear as support for the date. Develop these points and make the invitation and practical request more explicit so that each part of the task is covered more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you introduce the anniversary, describe the proposed party, explain its purpose and finish with a request. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and links such as “Along with this” and “As you know” connect related ideas. Some connections are less clear, however. The sentence about summer vacation does not clearly explain why the event would be easy to attend, and the final request contains a confusing break in “pictures that, and with the moments.” The closing “Thank you” and sign-off are appropriate, though the letter would progress more smoothly if the reason for the event and the help requested were linked more directly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the event and its purpose, including “banquet hall,” “convenient,” “cuisines” and “memories.” These choices give the letter some variety beyond basic party vocabulary. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “freshen up the memories,” “throw a party” in this context, and “miss this event.” There is also a spelling error in “rememeber,” and “everyday” is used where the intended meaning is “every day.” These slips do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for more idiomatic phrases for reconnecting, celebrating an anniversary and inviting classmates.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple sentences and some more developed structures, including the conditional explanation “because we used to come here” and the clause beginning “Although everyone has summer vacation.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “this is best place” needs an article, while “it will not hard to anyone” is missing a verb and has an incorrect construction. The sentence about decorating also becomes difficult to follow because its structure breaks down around “pictures that.” Review articles, complete verb phrases and sentence boundaries, and proofread longer sentences to ensure each clause connects clearly.
