Student answer (Band 6.5)

In the present scenario, hobbies play a very significant role to make our life happy. That is why, it is very important to have at least one hobby besides they are children, youngsters, workers or they are retired from their profession. I will discuss in the upcoming paragraphs that why having hobbies are important in one’s life.

First of all, nowadays, many people are turning their hobbies into professions such as photography, painting or music etc. which make them more happy and productive as well. For example, a survey in UK shows that people who pursue their interests as a profession are more productive than other people. Furthermore, it can keep people more healthy as they feel relaxed while doing their job. Moreover, in materialistic world everyone has lots of tensions and problems. When they do something which they want to do, it relaxes their mind and make them comfortable.

I believe that having at least one hobby is very beneficial for everyone. First of all, after the busy classes in the school, kids pursue their hobbies to relax their body and mind. As for the adults, after coming home from work they get tired and want to feel better, so people do lots of things to make them happy. For example, a survey in America shows that people who pursue their hobbies are less depressed than others.

In the conclusion, every person should spend some time to enjoy their hobbies. It makes them more healthy and positive in their life. Everyone has busy schedules, which can be frustrating and depressing. I think that hobbies are the best way to get rid of stress and anxiety.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing the importance of hobbies for various age groups. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive; for instance, the benefits of relaxation and stress relief are mentioned in both the second and third paragraphs without significant new depth. While the examples provided (surveys in the UK and America) are relevant, they are generic and lack specific detail. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more nuanced arguments, perhaps exploring how hobbies foster social connections or skill acquisition, rather than focusing primarily on stress relief across all age groups.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different ideas. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'In the conclusion'. However, some of these are used in a slightly mechanical or repetitive way. Additionally, the referencing in the first paragraph ('besides they are children...') is grammatically awkward and hinders the flow of the opening argument. Improving the transition between sentences and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their antecedents would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'productive', 'materialistic', 'anxiety', and 'profession'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simple phrasing. For example, the repeated use of 'make them happy' and 'do lots of things' lacks precision. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and less common lexical items to express your ideas with greater nuance. The word choice is functional but lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. For example, 'besides they are children' is incorrect; 'regardless of whether they are children' would be more accurate. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'a survey in UK' (should be 'the UK') and 'make their mind' (should be 'makes their minds'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are persistent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions.
