Student answer (Band 6.5)

It has always been a matter of debate whether it is essential for everyone to have a hobby. It does not matter if they are children, young people, working individuals or even retirees, they should have a hobby to pursue. In my viewpoint, this is a positive approach for the society. In the upcoming essay, I will discuss this perspective briefly.

To commence with, having a hobby could develop kids and young adults in multiple ways. By performing recreational activities such as reading and writing, kids can enhance their learning skills which would help them in their foundational learning. Similarly, the young generation sometimes pursue their hobby as a career. Shifting one's hobby into a career or business can provide an individual with significant growth. As they are interested and passionate about their career. For instance, it has been published in numerous studies that individuals having leisure interests often have high chances of success in both personal and professional life.

Furthermore, having a hobby is necessary for working individuals and retirees to keep themselves disconnected from daily-life stress and active during retirement, respectively. Working professionals cope with stress and deadlines all their day while doing their favourite activity they can give themselves a relief from such pressure. Since most adults have a sedentary lifestyle, It also helps them to be healthy. Moreover, old people should participate and develop hobbies related to physical fitness. This is because, retirees have limited moment which will affect their body and mind. By engaging themsleves in yoga or morning walk, they become physically fit and less prone to diseases.

To sum up, having a hobby is beneficial for every human being regardless of their age. I believe this as a positive trend for society. As it helps every one to grow and stay fit in their life whether it is a toddler or a retiree.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, covering children, young adults, working people, and retirees. The position is clear throughout, and the ideas are relevant. However, the development is somewhat generic. For instance, the argument regarding children could be more specific, and the link between hobbies and career success is asserted rather than deeply explored. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is supported by more detailed explanation or specific, illustrative examples rather than general statements. Overall, the response is well-structured and directly answers the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different age groups. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Similarly', 'Furthermore', and 'To sum up' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is clear, and the progression of ideas from childhood to retirement follows a logical sequence, making the essay easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate and generally appropriate for the task. You use some good collocations like 'sedentary lifestyle' and 'foundational learning'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and repetitive phrasing, such as 'pursue their hobby' and 'develop hobbies'. The range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions that would characterize a higher band score. Improving the variety of verbs and adjectives used to describe the benefits of hobbies would enhance your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'limited moment' (should be 'limited movement') and 'engaging themsleves' (spelling error). Additionally, the sentence 'As they are interested and passionate about their career' is a fragment. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on ensuring that complex sentences are punctuated correctly and that subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout the text.
