Student answer (Band 7.5)
It is often argued that everyone, regardless of their age or occupation, should have at least one hobby. I strongly agree with this view because hobbies can improve people’s mental and physical well-being and help them maintain a healthy balance between their personal and professional lives.
For children and young adults, hobbies are an excellent way to develop important skills outside the classroom. Activities such as playing sports, reading, painting or learning a musical instrument can encourage creativity, discipline and self-confidence. For example, a child who regularly plays football can become physically healthier while also learning valuable lessons about teamwork and perseverance. Similarly, learning to play an instrument requires patience and concentration, which can benefit students in their academic lives as well.
Hobbies are equally important for working adults, who frequently experience stress because of demanding jobs and family responsibilities. Spending time on an enjoyable activity provides a welcome break from daily pressures and can improve mental health. For instance, someone who spends an hour gardening or cycling after a busy working week may feel more relaxed and refreshed. Furthermore, hobbies can help people develop new skills that may eventually become useful professionally. A person interested in photography, for example, could turn this pastime into a source of additional income.
Finally, hobbies can significantly improve the quality of life of retired people. After leaving employment, individuals may experience loneliness or a lack of purpose. Engaging in activities such as gardening, travelling, volunteering or joining a book club can keep them active and socially connected. This can contribute to both emotional well-being and a greater sense of fulfilment.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that everyone should have a hobby. Although the choice of activity may differ according to age and circumstances, hobbies can provide relaxation, personal development and social interaction, making them beneficial throughout life.
