Student answer (Band 7.5)
It is often said that children, young adults, working people and retired people should all have at least one hobby. I completely agree with this opinion because hobbies can help people reduce stress, develop useful skills and enjoy their free time.
Firstly, hobbies are very important for children and young adults because they can help them develop different skills. For example, playing football can improve a child’s physical health and teach them how to work as part of a team. Similarly, activities such as reading, drawing or playing a musical instrument can improve creativity and concentration. These skills can also be useful in their education and future careers.
Secondly, working people can benefit greatly from having a hobby. Many adults have busy jobs and family responsibilities, which can make their lives stressful. Having some free time to do an enjoyable activity can help them relax and forget about their daily problems. For instance, a person who enjoys cooking or gardening may feel more comfortable and refreshed after spending time on these activities. As a result, they may be able to perform better at work.
Finally, hobbies are particularly useful for retired people. After retirement, some people may feel lonely or bored because they no longer have a regular working routine. Taking part in activities such as gardening, travelling, fishing or joining a social club can help them stay active and meet new people. This can have a positive effect on both their physical and mental health.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that everyone should have at least one hobby. Although people may choose different activities depending on their age and interests, hobbies can make life more enjoyable, reduce stress and help individuals develop useful skills.

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. Each paragraph is dedicated to a specific group mentioned in the prompt (children/young adults, working people, and the retired), which ensures a comprehensive coverage of the topic. The ideas are well-developed with relevant examples, such as the benefits of team sports for children and the stress-relief aspect for working professionals. The conclusion effectively summarizes your main points without introducing new information. Overall, the response is well-structured and directly answers the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay demonstrates a clear logical progression. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth, using appropriate linking words like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Finally', and 'In conclusion'. The use of cohesive devices is effective and not mechanical. Within paragraphs, ideas are logically sequenced, and referencing is clear throughout. The paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different groups discussed, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. The structure is coherent and contributes to the overall clarity of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas with precision. Phrases such as 'family responsibilities', 'regular working routine', and 'physical and mental health' are used correctly and naturally. While the vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for the task, it is generally standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or less common collocations. However, the current range is more than adequate for the task, and there are no errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional-like structures ('If... then' implied) and subordinate clauses ('Although people may choose...', 'which can make their lives stressful'). The grammar is highly accurate, with the majority of sentences being error-free. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. There are no significant grammatical slips, and the control over complex structures is consistent. The writing is fluent and easy to read, demonstrating a high level of grammatical competence.
