Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is often said that children, youngsters, working adults, and older generation should be involved in extra curricular activities in their life. I firmly believe that it is significantly important to have at least one area of interest among people of different age groups. This essay will examine the reasons behind my opinion in following paragraphs with some relevant examples.

To begin with the most prominent reason behind this, people can develop critical thinking and cognitive skills by engaging in recreational activities. It allows them to be more patient and disciplined. As a consequence, it enhances their productivity and vision. In addition, they can get an opportunity to escape from the reality and become significantly more effective. Moreover, activity that is physically challenging can contribute to a healthy lifestyle. For instance, people who are inclined to get involved in sports like basketball, football, and cricket seem to be more fit. These kinds of activities make people not only physically active but also mentally determined and focused.

Moving forward, retired people are more required to get a hobby in their life which they can get engaged in. Since they have sufficient time to utilize their resources efficiently, it will provide them an opportunity to interact with people from other communities as well. Consequently, they will become more aware about their surroundings.

To conclude, having an interest in soft skills in every age group of people brings a substantial number of benefits. Although it has become so demanding to get some spare time in this fast paced world, these activities can boost anyone’s confidence and emotional wellbeing.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, covering the importance of hobbies for different age groups. The position is clear throughout. While the ideas are relevant, the development is somewhat generic. For instance, the paragraph on retired people is quite brief and could have been extended with more specific examples of how hobbies provide social or cognitive benefits. The argument regarding 'escaping reality' is a bit vague and could have been better linked to the specific needs of working adults. Overall, the response is well-structured and fulfills the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'Consequently' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. However, the transition between the general benefits of hobbies and the specific focus on retired people could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for some flexibility. The student uses some good collocations like 'critical thinking', 'cognitive skills', and 'fast-paced world'. There are occasional instances where word choice could be more precise, such as 'more required to get a hobby' (should be 'more encouraged' or 'would benefit more from') and 'interest in soft skills' (which is slightly misused in the conclusion). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the range is adequate to convey meaning clearly and effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. Examples of complex structures include 'Since they have sufficient time to utilize their resources efficiently, it will provide them an opportunity...'. There are minor slips, such as 'older generation should be' (missing 'the') and 'in following paragraphs' (missing 'the'). However, the majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is generally accurate throughout the response.
