Student answer (Band 6.0)

A lot has written and said about hobbies. Many people believe that individuals across the all age groups should possess at least single hobby. I completely agree with this notion because hobbies are not only beneficial to enhance creativity but also a crucial tool to promote solitude.

The primary advantage for younger individuals to have a hobby is that it help to gain particular skills and boost artistic thinking of them. That is to say, when children incorporate in hobbies such as singing, drawing, reading and many more they feel more confident and express themselves easily. Additionally, after participating in recreational activities younger ones feels inspired to further their artistic side. For instance, school students who are interested in craft and paintings often come with innovative academic projects.

Having a hobby has a similar values for working professionals and retired individuals. Firstly, adults who tend to work for long hours and follow hectic work schedule one hobby can make them feel relax and rejuvenated and to unwind and connect with themself. Moreover, many experience loss of their loved ones and depression during this phase of life, having at least one hobby can significantly improve their metal well being and help the get along with a difficult phase. Secondly, retired people struggle with the loneliness and feel isolated in that case hobby can uplift their mood and can be exciting part of their daily routine. For example, elderly who engage in a hobby feel active and optimistic regarding their life. Hence, it is a vital part of their monotonous routine.

In conclusion, having at least one hobby is at most important for children, adults and elderly. A hobby act as an anchor to develop skills, enjoy solitude and combat loneliness.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that hobbies are beneficial for all age groups. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as children engaging in crafts or the elderly finding routine. However, the development is somewhat uneven; while the points are clear, some arguments, particularly regarding the 'solitude' aspect mentioned in the introduction, are not fully explored or linked back to the main thesis. The essay maintains a consistent position throughout, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0, but it falls into the 6.0 category due to the slight lack of depth in the supporting arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the needs of children from those of adults and the elderly. Cohesive devices such as 'The primary advantage', 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, there are some mechanical transitions and occasional awkward phrasing, such as 'in that case hobby can uplift', which slightly disrupts the flow. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the connection between sentences could be more sophisticated to reach a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'rejuvenated', 'monotonous', and 'innovative'. However, there are several word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'A lot has written' (should be 'has been written'), 'incorporate in hobbies' (should be 'participate in'), and 'metal well being' (should be 'mental well-being'). These errors do not impede communication, but they indicate a need for more precise control over word choice and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('it help to gain', 'younger ones feels') and missing articles ('a hobby', 'the elderly'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure is occasionally repetitive. The errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text, though they rarely prevent the reader from understanding the intended message. To improve, the student should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and subject-verb consistency.
