Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some people think that it is important for people of all ages including children, adolescents, people who are working as well as who retired must have atleast one hobby. Individuals who like to spend their time productively by choosing leaisure activities feel positive and energetic.

Since the creation of mankind, different people likes to do different things in their free time. These activities positively influence their mental wellbeing and overall health. Children and young adults who are under constant pressure of studies must find out some time to engage in their favourite pastime whether it is reading, painting or any sports. For example, many children who balance studies with their hobbies are performing better in academics than those who only focus on studies. People who are doing a job or business have quite busy schedules and find it difficult to relax. Additionally, after work they have household responsibilities which further leads to exhaustion. It is very important to engage in an activity which will relax the mind and help to unwind stressful routine. Many individuals after retirement or in old age feel very lonely and depressed as transition from one phase of life to another is always difficult. They must choose to spend their time actively and positively. For example, group activities like jogging, swimming or reading in clubs can keep them physically active as well as interaction with peers will help to stay motivated.

In my opinion, hobbies are a reflection of emotions, personality and individuality. People must find different ways to balance their routine which can help them to enjoy their time productively as these leisure activities improve physical and mental health.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, covering children, working people, and the retired. The position is clear throughout, and the ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of children balancing studies and the social benefits of hobbies for the elderly. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. To reach a higher band, you could expand more on the 'why'—for instance, explaining the psychological mechanisms behind why hobbies reduce stress for working professionals. Overall, the response is well-focused and directly answers the question posed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Additionally', 'For example', and 'In my opinion', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more sophisticated to improve the overall flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different groups mentioned in the prompt, which aids the reader's understanding of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'mental wellbeing', 'exhaustion', and 'transition'. There are some minor errors, such as 'leaisure' (spelling) and 'atleast' (should be two words). While you use some topic-specific vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items to convey your ideas with greater nuance. The current vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your points clearly without causing confusion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'different people likes' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'as well as who retired' (missing subject/verb). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, you should aim for a greater variety of complex structures and ensure higher accuracy in subject-verb agreement and article usage. The majority of your sentences are clear and easy to follow.
