Student answer (Band 7.0)
In today's fast-paced world, having a hobby is considered important for people of different age groups. I believe that engaging in leisure activities is beneficial for children and young adults because it helps them develop interpersonal skills, while working and retired people can use hobbies to reduce stress and maintain an active lifestyle.
The primary reason why children or young adults should have a hobby is because it will help to develop interpersonal skills such as communication and team building skills. For instance, participating in a musical, students will learn how to work in a team and will also enhance their social skills by interacting with other children. As a result, these skills can help in their professional life when communicating with clients.
Furthermore, leisure activity can be quite beneficial for working people because it helps them to refresh their mind. They are continuously stressed and exhausted owing to the work pressure. Therefore, if they have some kind of activity planned for each day, it might help them to break the monotony of life which will eventually relax their mind.
Moving further, the retired employees need to have something for their pass time to keep them active. After leaving their position at work, some people just sit ideally at home. As a result, they may become obese and have other health concerns. To illustrate, going for a morning and evening walk can help them to socialise with new people and will also keep them healthy.
In conclusion, having a hobby can provide significant benefits to people at different stages of life. While it can help younger individuals develop valuable interpersonal skills, it can also allow working people to relieve stress and help retirees remain physically and socially active.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, covering children, young adults, working people, and the retired. The position is clear throughout, and the ideas are well-developed with relevant examples, such as the mention of musical participation for children and walking for retirees. The essay maintains a consistent focus on the benefits of hobbies across these demographics. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more nuanced analysis or deeper exploration of the 'why' behind these benefits, rather than just stating them, but the current development is sufficient for a strong score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each group, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'The primary reason', 'Furthermore', and 'Moving further', which guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. The progression of ideas is smooth, and referencing is clear throughout. The structure is logical and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a high band score in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. The student uses some good collocations like 'fast-paced world', 'interpersonal skills', and 'break the monotony'. However, there are minor inaccuracies, such as 'sit ideally' (should be 'idly') and 'pass time' (should be 'pastime'). While the range is adequate to convey meaning precisely, it lacks the sophisticated, less common lexical items that would characterize a band 8 or 9. The current range is sufficient for a solid band 7.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the meaning is always clear. There are occasional minor errors, such as 'participating in a musical, students will learn' (a dangling modifier) and 'leisure activity can be' (should be plural or have an article). Despite these minor slips, the control over grammar is strong, and the errors do not impede communication. The variety of structures used is sufficient to support a band 7 score.
