Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is vital for people of all age groups to have some sort of hobby. According to my point of view, I agree with the statement. Not only can having a hobby improve skills, but it also helps to build new connections.

Having a good hobby can help people grow their personal skills. In other words, doing something that you like can help you build your self-confidence. Moreover, it improves your ability to do things correctly and in a proper manner. For example, playing video games can help people increase brain productivity and creativity. Also, it makes you better at time management, as game tasks are challenging and have to be completed within a certain time limit.

Furthermore, a hobby helps you make new contacts. This is because you meet different personalities through similar hobbies. As a result, people end up sharing the same interests and meeting new individuals. A good example of this can be seen in the music field. If you are good at playing the piano and you go to a local music festival, you can meet different people with various tastes in music, which ultimately leads to building new contacts. In addition to this, you can get a chance to show your performance in local bands through your connections and make some earnings from those performances.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that kids, youth, working professionals, and retired citizens should have a hobby, as it improves their personal ability to do things and helps build new contacts, which can lead to new employment opportunities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating an agreement with the necessity of hobbies for all age groups. The ideas are relevant and logically extended, particularly the discussion on skill development and social networking. While the points are well-supported, the development could be slightly more nuanced to reach a higher band; for instance, the argument regarding video games is a bit narrow. However, the position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes the main points. The response meets the requirements of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'In addition to this' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The referencing is generally clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the length of the essay. The flow is smooth, and the reader is guided through the argument without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning with some flexibility. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'personal skills', 'time management', and 'employment opportunities'. While the range is adequate, it lacks the more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions that would characterize a higher band. Some word choices are slightly repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'good' and 'help'. However, the language is natural, and there are no significant errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and the majority of sentences are error-free. Complex structures, such as conditional sentences ('If you are good at playing the piano...'), are used correctly. While there are a few minor slips in phrasing, they do not interfere with the clarity of the message. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the overall grammatical control is solid, supporting the clear communication of ideas.
