Student answer (Band 7.5)

It is considered imperative for people of all demographics to possess at least one hobby. I strongly support this statement and believe that hobbies are crucial activities in one's life, as they not only support cognitive and social development in younger people, but also support mental well-being in older people.

The primary reason for encouraging children and young adults to pursue extracurricular activities is the fact that they support cognitive and social development. When youngsters engage in hobbies that involve other people, they develop social and interpersonal skills, which contribute to their personality development. For instance, if children have a hobby of playing the piano, participating in group music sessions helps in their personal and social development. Hence, hobbies encourage overall development in growing children and young individuals.

Another reason is that hobbies act as a stress-buster for working and retired people. By practicing at least one recreational activity, individuals can alleviate the tedium of their daily lives and recharge themselves. For example, when employees spend some time on weekends on their favourite hobby, it allows them to unwind and relax, which prepares them for next week. Furthermore, the retired aging population can keep themselves busy while pursuing their hobbies, which prevents them from feeling isolated and depressed. Moreover, hobbies with physical activities support their muscles and keeps them physically active. Thus, pursuing hobbies is vital for working and older individuals' physical and mental well-being.

In conclusion, I firmly believe having a hobby is beneficial at every stage of life. While hobbies assist in the development of children and young adults, they also allow middle-aged and elderly people to unwind from the daily boredom and maintain their physical and emotional well-being. Therefore, people should make a consious effort to devote some of their leisure time to activities they genuinely enjoy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have fully addressed all parts of the prompt by discussing the importance of hobbies for children, young adults, working people, and the retired. Your position is clear from the introduction and is maintained consistently throughout the essay. Each paragraph provides relevant reasons and supporting examples, such as the piano example for children and the stress-relief benefits for employees. The ideas are well-developed and logically extended, demonstrating a strong understanding of the task requirements. To reach the highest band, you could further nuance your argument by briefly acknowledging potential counter-arguments, such as the challenge of finding time for hobbies in a busy modern lifestyle, before refuting them.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the needs of younger and older demographics is smooth. You make effective use of cohesive devices such as 'For instance', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is appropriate, with each section serving a distinct purpose. The flow is natural, and the relationship between sentences is clear throughout the response. The structure is highly effective and supports the overall clarity of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the task. Phrases like 'imperative', 'alleviate the tedium', and 'cognitive and social development' show a level of sophistication. While your word choice is generally accurate and natural, there is room to incorporate more precise collocations or less common idiomatic expressions to reach the highest band. For example, 'consious' is misspelled as 'consious' in the conclusion. Overall, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your ideas with precision and flexibility, and the minor spelling error does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a variety of complex sentence structures effectively, such as conditional clauses ('if children have a hobby...') and relative clauses ('which contribute to their personality development'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is generally strong. There are very few grammatical slips, and the ones present do not interfere with the reader's understanding. Your ability to combine simple and complex structures demonstrates a good command of English grammar. To improve further, ensure consistent attention to minor spelling details and strive for even greater variety in sentence openings.
