Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is vital for adolescents, youngsters and working professionals or retirees to pursue at least one pastime activity. In my view, having a hobby, whether at a young or old age, would impact a person in a positive manner.

Firstly, kids who develop a hobby by following their interests, such as music, dance or singing, always do better in academics because they get time to relax while dancing as well as learning music, rather than just completely focusing on studies. Consequently, they develop various coordination and synchronization skills. Secondly, individuals who regularly do activities as part of their daily routine, such as reading at a young age, are more likely to excel either in their higher studies or competitive exams as compared to others; the reason being that they have already developed analytical and cognitive skills which help them study for longer hours during exams.

Furthermore, working individuals would have a greater impact from hobbies to balance their work-life balance and to manage their job or business stress. For instance, an individual who regularly goes bowling or pool after their shift would forget about work-related stress and would go home relaxed. As a result, this not only helps them relax but also helps build strong relationships with family. On the other hand, people after retirement often feel bored when they do not have a fixed routine. However, if they follow their interests, like walking or gardening, then these traits definitely give them purpose to enjoy their after retirement period.

To conclude, In my opinion hobbies play a crucial role at every stage of a person's life from getting good grades to building stronger relationships with family or managing work life balance.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, covering the importance of hobbies for children, working adults, and retirees. Your position is clear from the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the mention of bowling or gardening. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are fully extended; for instance, the link between hobbies and academic performance could be deepened by explaining the psychological benefits of 'flow' or 'stress reduction' more explicitly. Overall, the response is well-focused and directly answers the question.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific demographic, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Consequently', 'Furthermore', and 'On the other hand' to link your points. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary the way you introduce new points to make the flow feel more natural. Paragraphing is used effectively, with each section clearly demarcating a new stage of life or a new argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'analytical and cognitive skills' and 'work-life balance' are used appropriately. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'have a greater impact from hobbies' (which is slightly unnatural; 'benefit more from hobbies' would be better). You also repeat the word 'relax' and 'stress' several times. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and idiomatic expressions to show greater flexibility and control over your word choices.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'people after retirement often feel bored' (should be 'retirees' or 'people after they retire') and 'the reason being that they have already developed' (a bit wordy). Punctuation is generally accurate, though there is a minor error in the conclusion with the double capitalization of 'In'. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, and your grammar does not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex structures would further enhance your score.
