Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that hobbies are essential for all age groups and can even lead to career opportunities. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, such as the discussion on stress relief and the transition of hobbies into professional pursuits. However, the development is slightly repetitive in the conclusion, and some points, such as the specific benefits for 'retired' individuals, could have been explored with more depth to fully satisfy the 'all age groups' aspect of the prompt. Overall, the response is focused and maintains a consistent position throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'For instance', 'In conclusion', and 'not only... but also', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task. While the flow is generally smooth, the connection between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to avoid a somewhat formulaic structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'pivotal', 'endeavour', and 'sustainability'. However, there are several spelling errors ('intresting', 'atleast', 'persue', 'facinate', 'ehances', 'sucessfull', 'indiviual', 'curial', 'activily') and some awkward word choices ('office goings', 'build their employer'). These errors are noticeable and occasionally distract the reader, though they do not prevent the overall meaning from being understood. A more careful proofreading process would significantly improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the student attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('Hobbies also plays', 'It assist') and article usage. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are errors in sentence construction that occasionally impede the flow. The majority of the sentences are understandable, but the frequency of minor errors in grammar and word formation prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage would be beneficial.
