Student answer (Band 7.0)

It has been often said that every individual should have at least a single hobby regardless of their age. This phenomenon has numerous reasons which will be discussed along with my opinion on this statement.

From my perspective, it is crucial to have a hobby because this will help people to improve quality of life. To be specific, taking part in activities like sports and games will not only improve physical well-being but also improve the ability to work in a team significantly, especially for youngsters. Additionally, adults and elders can take part in community services, where they can socialize and communicate with other citizens instead of feeling depressed at home due to workload and loneliness. For instance, many libraries organize events such as restocking books on shelves. Older citizens can assist in such activities, where they can socialize with local community.

Furthermore, hobbies can improve skills. When an individual works consistently on one particular thing, they can become proficient in that activity. For instance, a person who lifts weights on a daily basis in the gym, enhance both their mobility and form of performing any exercise.

Another reason why citizens should prioritize hobbies is that they can use their time in productivity rather than wasting it by using a mobile phone. In other words, most of the people spend hours scrolling short videos on social media, whereas they can pursue hobbies like reading and writing which will facilitate their academic knowledge and productivity. For example, scholars who study even after school hours often obtain better result in their examinations.

In conclusion, I believe that people who have hobbies become more socially active, knowledgeable and spend their time in better activities, which eventually improves their lifestyle.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that hobbies are beneficial for all age groups. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the mention of community service for the elderly and skill development for gym-goers. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the link between hobbies and 'academic knowledge' for scholars is a bit vague. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on the 'why' and 'how' of your arguments with more depth and nuance, ensuring that the connection between the hobby and the stated benefit is explicitly clear.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and cohesive devices such as 'To be specific,' 'Additionally,' and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, the transition between ideas could be smoother in places. For example, the shift from physical well-being to community service within the same paragraph feels slightly abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some cohesive links are a bit mechanical. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'socialize and communicate,' 'proficient in that activity,' and 'facilitate their academic knowledge' show a good command of language. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'use their time in productivity' (should be 'use their time productively') and 'enhance both their mobility and form of performing' (which is slightly awkward). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the range is adequate rather than wide. Focusing on more natural collocations would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You show control over basic grammar, and your meaning is always clear. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'most of the people' (should be 'most people') and 'enhance both their mobility and form' (subject-verb agreement error: 'enhances'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article usage slips throughout. While you use complex structures, they are not always error-free. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining the use of articles and prepositions to achieve more consistent accuracy.
