Student answer (Band 6.5)

Adapting a hobby has became a crucial aspect among people of all ages. In my opinion, this is a highly positive trend that brings long-term benefits for both individuals as well as society.

One major benefit of having at least one hobby is its positive impact on overall health. A hobby not only reduces the risk of mental issues such as lonliness, anxiety and dipression but also helps people maintain their fitness and live a healthy life. This is particularly important today when many jobs require long hours of sitting with minimal movement due to technology.

Having a hobby also provides valuable social advantages. It brings people together, providing opportunities of interaction, and helps building long lasting friendships. For instance, many young adults go outside of their houses for swimming, cycling and reading books in a library. Such opportunities create a sense of belongings as people meet new people and make good friends. Consequently, people learn how to interact and build a good relationship with each other.

Additionally, having a hobby provides essential skills for individuals, especially for teenagers. For example, youngsters often like to have a unique hobby such as singing, playing games and paintings which involves other peers. By performing in groups they often learn team spirit, kindness, patience and cooperation skills that further help them in building a great personality.

In conclusion, a hobby improves health, strengthen social relationships and foster personal growth. A good habit is worthwhile because it offers long-lasting advantages for both individuals and the community.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a positive opinion and providing reasons for different age groups. The ideas are relevant, such as health benefits, social interaction, and skill development. However, the development is somewhat generic. For instance, the mention of 'young adults' going to libraries to read is a bit narrow, and the link between hobbies and 'working people' or 'retired' individuals is only implied rather than explicitly explored. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific, nuanced examples for each demographic mentioned in the prompt to demonstrate a deeper engagement with the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as health, social advantages, or personal skills. Cohesive devices like 'One major benefit,' 'Additionally,' and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For example, the phrase 'a good habit' in the conclusion is a bit vague as it refers back to 'hobbies' generally. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'crucial aspect,' 'long-term benefits,' and 'team spirit.' However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'lonliness' (loneliness), 'dipression' (depression), and 'strengthen' (should be 'strengthens' for subject-verb agreement). Additionally, the phrase 'Adapting a hobby' is a collocation error; 'Adopting' or 'Taking up' would be more appropriate. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, these inaccuracies prevent the response from reaching a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some noticeable grammatical errors, such as 'has became' (should be 'has become') and 'helps building' (should be 'helps build'). Subject-verb agreement is occasionally inconsistent, such as 'a hobby improves health, strengthen social relationships and foster personal growth' (should be 'strengthens' and 'fosters'). Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the punctuation is generally accurate. To improve, focus on verb tense consistency and ensuring that gerunds or infinitives follow verbs correctly.
