Student answer (Band 7.0)
Adopting a hobby has become a crucial aspect among people of all ages. In my opinion, this is a highly positive trend that brings long-term benefits for both individuals as well as society.
One major benefit of having at least one hobby is its positive impact on overall health. A hobby not only reduces the risk of mental issues such as loneliness, anxiety and depression but also helps people maintain their fitness and live a healthy life. This is particularly important today when many jobs require long hours of sitting with minimal movement due to technology.
Having a hobby also provides valuable social advantages. It brings people together, providing opportunities for interaction, and helps build long-lasting friendships. For instance, many young adults go outside of their houses for swimming, cycling and reading books in a library. Such opportunities create a sense of belonging as people meet new people and make good friends. Consequently, people learn how to interact and build a good relationship with each other.
Additionally, having a hobby provides essential skills for individuals, especially for teenagers. For example, youngsters often like to have a unique hobby such as singing, playing game and painting which involves other peers. By performing in groups they often learn team spirit, kindness, patience and cooperation skills that further help them in building a great personality.
In conclusion, a hobby improves health, strengthens social relationships and fosters personal growth. A good habit is worthwhile because it offers long-lasting advantages for both individuals and the community.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a positive opinion and providing reasons for different age groups. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. For instance, the discussion on health benefits and social advantages is clear. However, the development could be more nuanced; while the essay mentions 'all ages', the examples focus heavily on young adults and teenagers. To reach a higher band, you could provide a more specific example of how a hobby benefits the retired, such as cognitive stimulation or combating isolation, to ensure the 'all ages' aspect is fully explored. Overall, the position is clear and maintained throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, such as health, social advantages, or personal skills. Cohesive devices like 'One major benefit', 'Additionally', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, the transition between ideas within paragraphs could be smoother. For example, the shift from 'swimming, cycling' to 'reading books' is a bit abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task. The progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some flexibility. Phrases like 'crucial aspect', 'long-term benefits', and 'sense of belonging' are used appropriately. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'playing game' (should be 'playing games') and 'go outside of their houses' (which is slightly unnatural). While you attempt to use some less common vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and the meaning is always clear. However, there are some minor errors, such as 'individuals as well as society' (should be 'individuals and society') and 'playing game and painting which involves' (should be 'playing games and painting, which involve'). While you use complex sentences, they are not always perfectly accurate. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring subject-verb agreement in all instances would help elevate your score. The errors present do not impede communication.
