Student answer (Band 7.0)
Adopting a hobby has become a crucial aspect among people of all ages. In my opinion, this is a highly positive trend that brings long-term benefits for both individuals and society.
One major benefit of having at least one hobby is its positive impact on overall health. A hobby not only reduces the risk of mental issues such as loneliness, anxiety and depression but also helps people maintain their fitness and live a healthy life. This is particularly important today when many jobs require long hours of sitting with minimal movement due to technology.
Having a hobby also provides valuable social advantages for retired people. It brings people together, providing opportunities for interaction, and helps build long-lasting friendships. For instance, many young adults go outside of their houses for swimming, cycling and reading books in a library. Such opportunities create a sense of belonging as people meet new people and make good friends. Consequently, people learn how to interact and build a good relationship with each other.
Additionally, having a hobby provides essential skills for individuals, especially for teenagers. For example, youngsters often like to have a unique hobby such as singing, playing games and painting which involves other peers. By performing in groups they often learn team spirit, kindness, patience and cooperation skills that further help them in building a well-rounded personality.
In conclusion, a hobby improves health, strengthens social relationships and fosters personal growth. A good habit is beneficial because it offers long-lasting advantages for both individuals and the community.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a positive position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. Each body paragraph focuses on a specific group (retired people, teenagers) or benefit (health), which provides a logical structure. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as swimming and painting. However, the development is somewhat generic; for instance, the link between hobbies and 'social advantages for retired people' is a bit thin, as the example provided focuses on young adults instead of the retired group mentioned in the topic sentence. To reach a higher band, ensure that examples are more precisely aligned with the specific demographic being discussed in each paragraph.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth, using cohesive devices like 'One major benefit,' 'Having a hobby also,' and 'Additionally.' The use of referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the retired people mentioned in the third paragraph and the example of young adults is slightly disjointed. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct points. Overall, the flow is natural, and the cohesive devices are used with sufficient flexibility to guide the reader through the argument without being overly mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate and appropriate for the task. You use some good collocations such as 'long-term benefits,' 'well-rounded personality,' and 'fosters personal growth.' There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some phrasing is slightly repetitive (e.g., 'having a hobby' is used as a sentence starter multiple times). While the range is sufficient to convey your meaning with precision, it lacks the more sophisticated, idiomatic, or nuanced lexical choices that would characterize a higher band score. The spelling is accurate throughout, and the word choice is consistently clear and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use complex sentences effectively, such as 'A hobby not only reduces the risk of mental issues... but also helps people maintain their fitness.' There are very few grammatical errors, and the punctuation is generally correct. The control of grammar is strong, with most sentences being error-free. To improve, you could incorporate a wider variety of advanced structures, such as conditional sentences or more varied passive constructions, to demonstrate greater flexibility. As it stands, the current level of accuracy is high, and the errors present do not impede communication.
