Student answer (Band 7.0)

Adopting a hobby has become a crucial aspect among people of all ages. In my opinion, this is a highly positive trend that brings long-term benefits for both individuals and society.

One major benefit of having at least one hobby is its positive impact on overall health. A hobby not only reduces the risk of mental issues such as loneliness, anxiety and depression but also helps people maintain their fitness and live a healthy life. This is particularly important today when many jobs require long hours of sitting with minimal movement due to technology.

Having a hobby also provides valuable social advantages to people of all age. It brings people together, providing opportunities for interaction, and helps build long-lasting friendships. For instance, many young adults go outside of their houses for swimming, cycling and reading books in a library. Such opportunities create a sense of belonging as people meet new people and make good friends. Consequently, people learn how to interact and build a good relationship with each other.

Additionally, having a hobby provides essential skills for individuals, especially for teenagers. For example, youngsters often like to have a unique hobby such as singing, playing games and painting which involves other peers. By performing in groups they often learn team spirit, kindness, patience and cooperation skills that further help them in building a well-rounded personality.

In conclusion, a hobby improves health, strengthens social relationships and fosters personal growth. A good habit is beneficial because it offers long-lasting advantages for both individuals and the community

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a positive opinion and supporting it with relevant arguments regarding health, social interaction, and personal development. The ideas are extended with examples, such as mentioning swimming and cycling for young adults or singing and painting for teenagers. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the development could be more nuanced by acknowledging potential challenges or by providing more specific, real-world examples rather than general statements about 'youngsters' or 'many jobs'. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, such as 'One major benefit of having at least one hobby is its positive impact on overall health.' Cohesive devices like 'Additionally,' 'Consequently,' and 'For instance' are used to guide the reader through the arguments. However, the transition between ideas is sometimes slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is clear. To improve, the student could vary the cohesive devices further to ensure the flow feels more natural and less formulaic.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific language such as 'well-rounded personality,' 'minimal movement,' and 'sense of belonging.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and some collocations are slightly repetitive or basic. For instance, 'make good friends' and 'build a good relationship' could be elevated to more sophisticated alternatives. There are no significant spelling errors that impede communication, but the use of less common lexical items is somewhat restricted, which prevents the essay from reaching the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and the meaning is always clear. However, there are minor errors, such as 'people of all age' (should be 'ages') and 'many jobs require long hours of sitting' (which is grammatically acceptable but could be more fluid). The use of punctuation is generally accurate. To achieve a higher score, the student should aim for a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or more sophisticated passive constructions, while maintaining the current level of accuracy.
