Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that having a hobby is crucial for minors, youngsters, workers and older people. I strongly agree with this view because they can learn new skills and spend their leisure time in a more interesting way. This essay will discuss why it is essential to have at least one hobby in the following paragraphs.

There are several benefits of having a hobby, the first is learning new skills and being more creative. To explain it, if humans have different hobbies, then they may learn something new from them, and they may start to create new ideas related to their hobbies. For example, if adults hobby to play outside games, then it helps them to stay fit and reduce their study stress.

Moreover, hobby supports to spend their time well on their favourite activity. To expand it, retired people are usually free because they do not have a job, so spending their time on hobbies helps them pass their free time well, and it may also helps to use their phones less, which can reduce the effect on their eyesight. For example, older people can do gardening which increases their knowledge related to vegetables and plants.

To conclude, the age factor does not affect the ability to adapt to any hobby; it is important for everyone. According to me, it has beneficial to reduce stress and increase skills. Additionally, in the modern world, number of individuals suffer from depression and other kinds of diseases, so spending time on their favourite activity plays a significant role.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing why having a hobby is important for different age groups, specifically children, working people, and retired individuals. A clear position is stated in the introduction ("I strongly agree with this view"), and ideas are supported with reasons and examples, such as mentioning older people doing gardening to increase their knowledge of plants. However, some ideas are a bit repetitive and under-developed, falling into over-generalisation at times. For instance, the example "if adults hobby to play outside games" lacks precision and fluency in its development. Overall, the response meets the requirements for Band 6 because it addresses all parts of the prompt with relevant ideas, though some areas could be extended and clarified further to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as "To explain it," "Moreover," and "To conclude," although some of these transitional phrases sound rather unnatural or mechanical rather than flexible. Referencing is generally clear, but occasional clunky phrasing affects the smooth progression of ideas between sentences. Despite these minor cohesive flaws, the writing is easy to follow, making it a solid representative of Band 6 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their main ideas clearly. There are attempts at less common vocabulary such as "leisure time," "creativity," and "depression," but these are accompanied by noticeable word-choice and collocation errors. For example, the student writes "if adults hobby to play" instead of "if adults have a hobby of playing," and "helps to use their phones less." Spelling is generally accurate, but the lexical range is somewhat limited and repetitive, which prevents the response from achieving a higher score. Communication is not impeded, but precision is lacking.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ("if humans have different hobbies, then they may learn..."). However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions. Examples include "if adults hobby to play," "hobby supports to spend," and "it may also helps to use." Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical inaccuracies occur across many sentences. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they restrict the grammar score to Band 5.5, as the control over complex structures is inconsistent and error-prone.
