Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is believed that having at least one hobby is incredibly important for all age groups including children, youngsters, adults, and elders. I also agree with this view as it can brings several benefits in individuals lives.

One main reason why pursuing a hobby for young people is important because it can make their future bright. When people take part in their favourite activities along with their study, they can develop their interest and even try to polish their skills. If they are quite excellent in a particular activity, they can pursue it as a career in the future, due to which, they not only earn name and fame but also can become able to secure their future.

Working people can take break from their busy schedule if they are interested in leisure activities. Nowadays, people are leading stressful lives either due to their work commitments or other responsibilities. In this way, they might face a lot of problems which may impact their overall well being. Hobbies have potential to relax their mind from unnecessary thoughts. As a result, they can enjoy happy and healthy lives.

Having a hobby can be beneficial for old people as well. In later life, most of the time, retired people stay alone at home, which can cause loneliness for them. Sometimes, they feel stressed and frequent stress may ultimately become cause of depression or memory loss. Hobbies can help elder people to divert their minds. Consequently, they can stay active in their later life by keeping themselves busy with their favourite activities.

In conclusion, pursuing at least one hobby is really essential for each generation because it can be suitable for future career, reduce stress and loneliness. With the help of a hobby, individual can lead happy and healthy lifestyles.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing the importance of hobbies for children, working adults, and retired individuals, and clearly states an overall position in the introduction. The ideas are extended and supported with relevant explanations, such as how hobbies can lead to future careers for young people, relieve stress for working individuals, and prevent loneliness and depression in the elderly. While the reasoning is logical and addresses the breadth of the prompt, some of the supporting points tend to generalize slightly (for example, the assumption that retired people universally face loneliness). However, the task is fully covered with a clear position throughout, fitting the Band 7 descriptor well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear overall progression and logical organization. Each body paragraph is dedicated to a specific demographic mentioned in the prompt (young people, working people, old people), which makes the structure easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately. Cohesive devices are employed effectively to connect ideas, such as "One main reason," "In this way," and "Consequently." Although referencing and transition use are occasionally a bit mechanical, the logical flow is maintained throughout, resulting in a solid performance that aligns with the Band 7 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, incorporating terms like "commitments," "well being," "divert their minds," and "lifestyles." There are some attempts at less common lexical items, though occasional word choice and collocation issues appear, such as "it can brings several benefits in individuals lives" and calling older individuals "elder people" rather than "elderly people." Furthermore, there are minor repetitive elements with words like "future" and "stress." However, the vocabulary is adequate for the task, meaning does not become obscured, and communication is clear, placing this comfortably at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional-like clauses and subordinate clauses (e.g., "When people take part in their favourite activities along with their study, they can develop their interest..."). There are several grammatical errors present throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ("it can brings"), missing articles ("become cause of depression"), and minor prepositional inaccuracies. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear to the reader. This performance aligns with a Band 6.0 classification.
