Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is essential for people of every age group to have a minimum of one hobby that they should persue. I completely agree with this notion because it helps them to be skillful and provides them a break from their daily routine.

First of all, utilizing one's free time in developing a skill by participating in a hobby is helpful to grow in life. Moreover, when a person is indulged into hobbies like sports, painting, writing or reading they tend to develop their physical, cognitive and intellectual skills. For instance, if someone is actively engaged in playing mind games such as puzzles or sudoko, their mental ability improves. As a result, when anyone is involving themselves in different activities when they are free, they are becoming better in one way or the other.

Additionally, hobbies give a break from a monotonous lifestyle where an individual follows a set schedule. For example, a child wakes up in the morning then gets ready and goes to school. Afterwards, he/she comes back and relax a bit and does homework and goes to sleep. Its the same kind of cycle everyday for majority of people, therefore, having a hobby gives them time for themselves. Hence, people can do whatever they enjoy doing according to their age and abilities in their me-time and label it as their hobby.

To conclude, it is necessary for every person to have some hobby as it is beneficial is many ways. As hobbies help individuals in attaining various skills and give them opportunities to have a break from a fixed routine.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear, well-supported position that hobbies are essential for people across all age groups. The writer introduces two main arguments: skill development and a much-needed break from routine. Ideas are extended with relevant examples, such as mentioning specific hobbies like puzzles, painting, and sports to illustrate cognitive and physical growth. The discussion on monotonous lifestyles effectively covers the working and student demographics mentioned in the prompt. While some of the supporting explanations are slightly generalised, the overall task is fully addressed with relevant ideas that are sufficiently developed, fitting the criteria for a solid Band 7 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with an introduction that states the writer's stance, followed by two well-defined body paragraphs exploring specific benefits, and concluding with a concise summary. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to guide the reader, with transition words such as "First of all," "Moreover," and "Additionally" creating a structured flow. However, referencing and paragraphing show minor mechanical tendencies, and the conclusion is a single sentence fragment rather than a fully developed final thought. Nevertheless, the overall arrangement is coherent, earning a steady Band 6.5 or 7.0, with clear progression that aligns well with the Band 7 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, providing a sufficient range to discuss hobbies and lifestyle impacts flexibly. The writer attempts some less common lexical items, such as "monotonous lifestyle," "cognitive and intellectual skills," and "actively engaged." However, there are notable word choice inaccuracies and spelling mistakes, such as "persue" instead of pursue, and awkward collocations like "when anyone is involving themselves" or "beneficial is many ways." These lexical slips do not impede communication, as the meaning remains clear throughout, but the frequency of these minor errors prevents the score from reaching a higher band. The vocabulary fits comfortably into the Band 6 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay displays a reasonable mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and relative clauses such as "when a person is indulged into hobbies... they tend to develop..." and "if someone is actively engaged...". However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, including prepositional misuse ("indulgend into" instead of "indulged in"), a sentence fragment in the conclusion, and minor punctuation issues such as missing commas after introductory phrases. While these errors occur with some frequency, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the arguments without difficulty. This balance of mixed structures and manageable errors corresponds well to a Band 6 score.
