Student answer (Band 6.5)
In recent years, there is considerable discussion about whether it is significant for all age of people to have at least one hobby. I believe hobbies are very important for kids, youngsters, busy professionals and retired people. This is because people choose their hobbies according to their preferences in which they are comfortable and feel relaxed.
Firstly, individuals develop hobbies most likley in their childhood. For children, hobbies are the first thing they develop by their own choice. They enjoy and feel pleasent while doing their hobbies. They often learn skills while doing their favourite hobby which makes them more cheerful and practical in their childhood. Therefore, hobbies make children happy and developed in their early age.
Secondly, for young generation hobbies are the part of their leisure time. They like to spend their free time while doing their favourite things in which they feel relaxed and enjoy the time. Thirdly, working people often forget their hobbies because they are busy in work-life balance. However, for them hobbies should be compulsory because it is only the source of happiness in their life. For example, in many institutions, one small part of the office is utilised for activities such as, tennis, pool, chess and golf where employees can spend their leisure time productively.
Finally, the retired people who are at home for rest of their life are less likely to entertain themselves. Hobbies can give them a sense of happiness and also by doing hobbies they can do physically activities.
In conclusion, I think it is important to have at least one hobby for individuals in every part of their life to make their lives happy and entertained.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing why hobbies are important for children, young adults, working people, and retired individuals. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as office spaces dedicated to recreational activities like tennis and chess. Although some of the points are slightly generalised, particularly regarding the retired group, the overall coverage is solid and directly answers the prompt. The development is coherent and well-structured around the four target groups mentioned in the prompt. This performance aligns comfortably with the Band 7 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Paragraphing is utilised effectively, with each body paragraph dedicated to a specific age group or life stage introduced in the prompt (e.g., 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Thirdly', 'Finally'). Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in their framing. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression from childhood to retirement flows naturally. This meets the criteria for Band 6.5 to 7.0, and given the clear logical sequencing and sufficient paragraphing, a Band 7.0 is well-deserved.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to incorporate less common items such as 'work-life balance', 'productively', and 'preferences'. However, there are notable limitations and word choice inaccuracies, such as 'all age of people' instead of 'all ages of people' and 'physically activities' instead of 'physical activities'. Spelling and word-choice errors, while noticeable, do not impede communication. The lexical range is sufficient for some flexibility, but inaccuracies keep the score firmly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied structures like conditional and subordinate clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in tense usage, prepositional phrases, and word forms, such as 'most likley' (spelling and placement), 'busy in work-life balance', and 'rest of their life'. Despite these errors, meaning is rarely impeded, and communication remains clear. The grammatical control fluctuates between simple and complex structures, which is characteristic of Band 6 performance.
