Student answer (Band 6.5)

It has been believed that everyone should have at least one activity to do in their leisure time. I completely agree with the statement that having a hobby is important for our health and imagination but only after keeping a few things in mind.

Hobbies can improve thinking ability and creativity levels at a young age. It is important for children to spend their time doing activities that can improve their imagination. For example, hobbies such as drawing, reading, and acting can improve their understanding, communication and help them to think out of the box. Also, many teens and adults excel so much in a particular skill that they chose it as their main profession. A lot of famous painters, storytellers and actors started their professional journey by pursuing it in their free time. Moreover, having a hobby is important for both physical and mental health especially in retirement era. Older people have a lot of free time and an activities that can keep their body and mind busy is really helpful for their health.

However, people should not spend a lot of time on lesiure acts if they cannot make money out of it. For instance, I have seen people getting involved in performing such acts so much that they do not focus on their job, which reflects on their performance and professional growth. In addition to this, we should only do these kind of activities in our free time and should not avoid family and friends while getting busy in it as personal relationships are as much important as doing any activity.

In conclusion, I agree that one should have an hobby at every stage of the life that can make mind relaxed and improve thinking ability. Though, we should keep our personal relationships and professional work into consideration while doing them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on the importance of hobbies across different age groups, from children to retired people. Ideas are well-supported with relevant examples, such as drawing and acting for children, and how some turn their leisure pursuits into professions. The candidate also introduces a counter-perspective about balancing hobbies with professional and personal responsibilities, which extends the discussion nicely. Although some arguments are slightly condensed, the overall task requirements are fully covered, matching the Band 7 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with distinct body paragraphs focusing on benefits and potential drawbacks. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well to guide the reader, as seen with transition words like 'For example', 'Also', and 'Moreover'. However, there are a few minor mechanical transitions, such as 'However, people should not spend a lot of time on lesiure acts...', where referencing could be smoother. Overall, the structural progression is clear and easy to follow, supporting a solid Band 7 rating.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, incorporating less common items such as 'thinking ability', 'professional journey', and 'retirement era'. There are a few spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'lesiure acts' instead of 'leisure activities', 'an activities' (grammatical slip), and the phrasing 'retirement era' which sounds slightly unnatural compared to 'retirement years'. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication, comfortably placing this in the Band 6.5 or 7 range; a Band 6.5 is awarded here due to minor recurring inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and conditional structures. There are several error-free sentences, but a few noticeable mistakes persist, such as 'chose it as their main profession' (tense agreement should be 'choose'), 'these kind of activities' (plural/singular mismatch), and 'an hobby' (article error). Punctuation is generally sound. Because complex structures are attempted with mixed accuracy and occasional errors do not impede communication, this aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors.
