Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing why it is important for children, young adults, working people, and retirees to have a hobby. A clear position is presented throughout the essay, and the main ideas are extended with reasons and examples, such as dancing for fitness and arts and crafts for personal growth. While some of the supporting points are slightly repetitive in phrasing, the overall scope of the prompt is covered appropriately. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, matching the expectations of a Band 6.0 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into a clear four-paragraph structure, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is a coherent overall arrangement, and basic cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, expressions like 'behind it why people need' and pronoun referencing issues ('when they some kind of hobby') detract from the flow. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, but logical transitions between sentences can feel repetitive.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their ideas about hobbies and mental health effectively. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary items and phrases, such as 'hectic schedule', 'pivotal role', and 'overall growth'. However, frequent word-choice errors, incorrect word forms (e.g., 'necessay', 'ans', 'refreshed' written as 'refresh', 'doing dance' instead of 'dancing'), and awkward collocations occur throughout the text. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the response, such as missing auxiliary verbs, incorrect prepositions, and subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'hobbies plays', 'people to having'). Many complex sentences contain structural flaws, such as 'people who like to do dance after doing that activity they feel more energetic'. While the meaning remains generally clear, the high frequency of basic and complex structural errors keeps the performance at a Band 5.0.
