Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address all parts of the task by discussing why hobbies are important for children, adults, and retired people, and the writer clearly states their agreement with the statement. Ideas are supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of a grandfather's gardening hobby and a child playing sports. However, the ideas lack full development and depth, remaining somewhat simplistic. Crucially, the response falls short of the minimum word count requirement, containing only 221 words compared to the required 250 words. This under-length impacts the overall completeness of the task response, as further elaboration on the various age groups was needed. Consequently, this warrants a band score of 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response has a discernible overall structure with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing different groups, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is attempted, though some paragraphs are quite dense and run-on, such as the first body paragraph. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often basic, repetitive, or mechanically applied, such as 'Firstly,' 'Furthermore,' 'Moreover,' and 'For example.' Progression is sometimes difficult to follow due to abrupt transitions and referencing issues, such as pronoun confusion in sentences like 'A child how love to playing sports game then they can learn.' While there is some logical organisation, the lack of smooth progression and accurate cohesive ties places this performance firmly at band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively limited and basic, with frequent spelling errors ('contempary', 'ear', 'singal', 'intrest', 'youngones', 'paraghraphs', 'numours', 'benefical', 'canve', 'backgard', 'gardaning') and word-form inaccuracies ('palying', 'how love to playing', 'relax' instead of 'relaxed'). There are attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'beneficial' and 'imagination', but the high density of lexical and spelling errors frequently strains the reader and impedes communication. The range is minimally adequate for the task, reflecting the characteristics of a band 4.5, which rounds to a 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty and fraught with grammatical errors. Examples include 'it is important at least singal intrest... for survive', 'If children and adults has one hobby then they can learn so numours things', and 'everyones should have at least one hobby so they can do in free time'. Subject-verb agreement errors, missing prepositions, and incorrect verb tenses are pervasive throughout the text. While basic meaning is usually conveyed, the high frequency of grammatical inaccuracies means that error-free sentences are rare, placing this criterion at a band 4.5, which is represented by a 4.5 score.
