IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is important for children, young adults, working people and the retired to have at least one hobby.

What's your opinion about this?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

I believe, it is not necessorily important to have at least one hobby at any age but definitely having one, actually keeps you engaged during leisure time. However, some individuals like I, get easily bored when doing same activity everytime when free and always want to explore new things.

In today's world, people have no or very limited free time particularly children and young adults and they could not actually determine what their actual hobby is. One of the big reason I could think is that, wide range of study curriculum and extra curriculum activities. Nowadays, artificial intellegence, computer programming language and many other subjects are became mandatory part of the study along with subjects such as Maths, Science etc. So, in this era, its actually very difficult follow one choice of activity and admit it as a hobby.

Whereas, if I talk about retired individual then definitely it is much more beneficial to have atleast one hobby which they can do to not get bored, as they have much more leisure time than children and young adults. Although, I strongly believe that it is not necessorily important, when nowadays, there are hundreds of activities to explore which are for people of any age. For example, we have seen in long-term care, they arrage wide range of activities for all kind of retired people and they get encouraged by the caretakers to participate.

Overall, in today's, artificial intelligence era, people should not restrict themselves in one sort of activity they like the most, instead explore today's innovation in all most all the sector

However, referencing and transitions are at times mechanical or somewhat abrupt, such as 'Whereas, if I talk about retired individual then definitely...', which disrupts the smooth flow of ideas. Paragraphing is present and generally appropriate, but the management of cohesive ties prevents the text from reaching a higher band. These characteristics align well with the descriptors for Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student displays an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'curriculum', 'artificial intelligence', and 'long-term care'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'necessorily' instead of necessarily, 'extra curriculum' instead of extracurricular, 'became' instead of have become, and 'arrage' instead of arrange. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they reflect recurrent inaccuracies in spelling and collocation that prevent the lexical score from reaching Band 7.0, making Band 6.0 the most accurate description.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over clause structures through conditional and relative clauses. Nevertheless, frequent grammatical and punctuation errors occur, such as unnecessary comma usage ('I believe, it is not...'), missing pluralisation ('retired individual'), subject-verb agreement issues ('subjects is became'), and preposition errors ('difficult follow one choice').
